At 8K miles in my S600, it has averaged 20.8 MPG from both city driving (3K) and HW driving (5K).

But I would be very surprised if anyone else could get that kind of mileage out of an S600.

Your mpg numbers are so flabbergastingly high in your umpteen S600 mileage post... Next time you start your car in your garage, reset trip computer and leave it alone for the next 1000 miles, then get back to us.
Don't set the trip as you are coasting down Pike's Peak and then claim a 20 mpg number showing, that's meaningless...

Driving from Austin Tx to Fredericksburg Tx I typically get 22.x MPG (where the x really does not matter much)

Driving the 7 miles in Austin daily traffic (to/from work) I typically get 17 MPG.

As anyone with access to a topological survey map can attest, its pretty flat from Austin to Fredericksburg (and back: although not without hills.) For those of interest: the 7 mile trip from central Austin to work goes out over Lake Austin Blvd, over the low water crossing at Red Bud Trail, north on Westlake drive, cut over on Toro Canyon rd, to Westlake drive, and across 360. This road has plenty of up and down and plenty of traffic. If anyone is in the Austin Area wants to see how I do this drive, I am willing.

The new 4L will have the same torque rating, with more HP.

I read that too, but the 4.0 AMG version in the GTS is only putting out 478, so I'm not sure the non-amg version will be at 516.

So this past few days I've had a chance to try a few things, including a 300+ mile round trip with only 2 people in the car.

I have averaged an indicated 24.x mpg (up and back to our cabin at 4000 ft on some twisty mountain roads on CA HWY 4), which is the best so far, although we'll see what the final number is when I fill up at the pump later this week (probably 10% less). This means I'll have gotten close to 450 miles from the tank. Not too bad. (S550 v4). I really have to wonder where the 26mpg EPA numbers come from though. I was driving at 70 +/- mph with no assistance from distronic. I had the ECO game bars all maxed out, I think it said I was at 99% for ECO.

I think that 2 factors have mad a difference:
1) I inflated the tires to 38F/39R (this is the max recommendation per the values inside the fuel filler door)
2) I only had 2 adults in the car, although I had a trunk packed with stuff on the return trip, having filled a shopping cart at Costco and driving all that stuff home.


One other thing I had a chance to focus on. The buzz at idle. It came and went at various stops as I described earlier in the post. This time, when it came, I dropped the car into neutral and immediately the buzz went away. Putting the car back into Drive, it usually came back, although it seems like it was less 'buzzy' when I did. I think it's load related to the transmission and I'm now wondering if it's simply a byproduct of the 4Matic setup. At idle, in Neutral, the engine was completely smooth, you couldn't tell it was on except by looking at the tachometer needle.

Anyway, I really love this car! Best car I've ever owned and an absolute pleasure to drive.

I have a 2014 S550 and I average 19.8 MPG. I really don't monitor city vs highway, but just overall.

I alway keep it in sport mode and sport suspension.

That's impressive; you are probably never running the engine to keep the ac on in that summer NC heat, waiting for the wife to come out of the shopping mall...

Edit: I have never reset trip computer since buying my 2014 S550, 17.3mpg over 32,500 miles...
But being from Southern California, I tend to get caught in something known as a traffic jam...

Almost 3 hours of driving with CC set at 70 MPH, averaging 65 MPH after leaving Flagstaff from the center of old Flagstaff.

I submit anyone (ANYONE) with driving discipline can get these kinds of numbers.
If you can't it is not the car holding your numbers back.

The gas tank on S-Class is not that big, and what I don't care for are the frequent trips to the gas station.

In the w222 the 4matic and 2 wheel drive get exactly the same gas mileage. I'll trust the engineers at MB over you or even the more intelligent 5th grader.

The 4Matic has 1 MPG lower mileage. Check the EPA certification numbers.

I"ll surely check but I'm positive that I heard an engineer specifically say they got the same mileage because they used some weight saving techniques in the 4matic.

The 4matic has more moving parts and more internal friction.

I doubt it's friction. The Highway MPG is the same for both. It's only the city mileage that's off 1mpg according to the EPA. I'm still looking for the engineering video I saw.

Curb weight for the 2019 S450/2WD is 4553 lbs

Curb weight for the 2019 S450/4Matic is 4685 lbs

The heavier 4Matic burns more gas in stop/go traffic.

For the S560 for awhile I saw the RWD and AWD both got 17/27, but then the other day I saw somewhere the RWD gets 18/27.
