OIL 0W40 OR 5W40
For those of you that DIY, what do you run. I found Mobil 1 5W40 at Walmart, but it is only sold in 4Q containers. If I buy the Mobil 1 0W40, its 5Q's for less money. Also read that the Mobil 1 5W40 is for diesel engines, has extra additives that are bad for catalytic converters....

Mobil 1 0W-40 has viscosity specs so close to 5W-40 that Mobil can make up a batch (10K gallons) of product. If this batch comes out a bit on the thin side, it goes in the 0W-40 cans. If it comes out a bit thick it goes in the 5W-40 cans, and it if comes out just right, it can go in either set of cans.
TDT has more ZDDP (1100 PPM IIRC) than std Mobil 1, more detergent, and small changes to the additive package to make it more suitable for diesels than from gasoline cars. I use TDT in my Ferrari for the ZDDP; and the Ferrari is used often on race tracks in High performance driving scenarios.
European Car Formula also has more ZDDP than std Mobil 1 but not as much as TDT. ECF is a bit thicker on all its specs than std M1. ECF is to meat Merc and BMW specs for AMG and M engines.
For "just driving around" applications, none of this maters. Just buy a quality brand (M1) in a reasonable grade (XW-40) and don't worry about what the value of "X" happens to be.

Thank you for the education. The charts are almost identical for the 0W & 5W. Unless you live where the temps are below 0 or above 100 most of the time, anything is the middle should work. I guess I'll mix up the remaining 5W with the 0W and end up with 2.5W 40
Again, thank you for your time and the information!! I know there are probably similar questions asked else ware in the forum, and the oil wars and info can be overwhelming with what people use.

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to share my agreement with @Nice Ride 's comment. I recently purchased a C55 and have been a bit overwhelmed by some of the threads arguing over "which oil is best oil?". @Mitch Alsup has managed to explain everything in four simple sentences. Thanks Mtich!

I use 0w/40 Mobil 1 in my current W222. Meets the MB spec. I used it in my w221 for 129,000 miles and had not one engine issue. My oil analysis were fantastic till the day I traded it in. My change interval is between 5000 and 7500 depending on use and my schedule.
