I am looking to purchase a 2016 with 20" AMG wheels too. My roads are really poor, so I would need to swap out the 20" wheels. Are there any safety issues with swapping out 20" for 19" wheels?

I went from 19's to 20's, 19's had factory continentals, non run flat. I'm in PA, BAD roads and the 20's ride just as good and actually feel better,. Might be due to the tires. I love the Michelin A/S 3+, great tire that was just re-done a year ago, (one of the top rated tires out there now for all season high performance)
The key is keeping your air pressure correct and not letting it dip. That will protect you! 39 psi front 41 rear with 20's. Then no worry about bends.

i'm concerned about potholes overall - the weather has killed the roads here in NJ. I got rid of my Z4 because of the low profile tires and i was more worried about potholes than driving in general.
I have the AMG 20" and rode about 5 miles on the pirelli summer tires which i'll sell (or try) once i take photos of them.
i can't compare the ride quality of that versus the continentals. I will say i've read folks swapping out the summer for the continentals for a better ride. I didn't have enough wheel time to compare. if i can't sell, i MAY switch to the summers oh, this summer. I LIKE the idea of run flats (okay, MOE) but NOT in the snow (we're expecting 12" to 24" today/tomorrow.
being nervous, i bought another slime kit, and so i have the pump with slime kit, extra bottle of slime, and some wacky $25 tire repair kit from amazon - where you use an included hammer and "nail" these rubber encased nails. supposed to be a permanent fix - i don't care - i bought a tire and wheel warranty - but i want to get to my destinations. without a spare i'm nervous about flats without MOE tires. i'm waitng for my second tire repair kit to come (that handle type with rubber strips). lastly, i ordered some replacement valves (in case somehow i screw up removing the valve with the slime kit) - another $5 or so - then i think i'm as bullet proof as i can be unless there's a major gouge. once i get where i'm going i can make an appointment at benz for a tire replacement.
i will say, i was warned at the shop that originally i had the wrong tires - huh? but it turns out he meant non run flat (i knew that - there are no all season 20" run flats - bummer or i'd have bought in a heart beat). shop also said sidewalls are stronger on the run flat, so less likely to have rim damage. again, i have the warranty.
if given the option, i'd have NEVER gone for the 20" wheels. i think they look great, and so far performing great, but there are limited options, and NO all season run flats. i WOULD sacrifice ride quality or noise for the security. oh well.
The whole key here is keeping tire pressures 39/41 or close to that if you have BAD potty roads. Most don't realize it, but even the door tag on a stock car with 20's has those pressures higher for car with 20's. for ex, this is older pic, but same idea.

thanks - these bad boys on ebay or where? and a w221 spare will work okay for us? i presume a compact spare - just put in the trunk and lose the trunk space? doesn't appear to have enough room under the carpet floor, or do you remove the Styrofoam there?
thanks again!!!!!
I have the MY17 s63 and thought the S class share the same body. I thought the S class comes standard with 19" and the S63 like mine comes with 20". I am thinking of upgrading to aftermarket 22" and like others have said, more rubber to ground should be better.
I just bought 2018 S560 ..Magnetite Black, gorgeous color with premium leather upgrade inside, it is my 7th S class since 1999, never had performance tire, so I tried 20" performance wheel Pirelli ... drove 150 miles so far.
No way in the world, i could drive this ride quality for the next few years. It feels like riding my Son's Hyndai Sonata LOL. i gotta change to 19" all season tire, non performance. Called my sales rep. and he is willing to swap my 20" rim and tire to 19" multi spoke all season Michelin run flat tire.
No offense to sporty drivers, I like to cruise Southern California here and there, home and work, and IMO, Performance tire sucks! It defect the purpose of smooth, silky ride of S Class. My workers think 20" rim looks beautiful and fits better to this model, however I care about my drive quality over looks.
out of 7 past S class, thanks to 20" performance wheel, i experienced a horrible ride for the first time. Anyone considering new S class, choose 19" !!!!! 19 or 18 non performance.
19 to 20 doesn't really make a difference. It's the tire, and now if you go to a RUN FLAT in a 19", it's not going to be any better. You need a NON RUN FLAT.
Also check the tire pressures and made sure they aren't too high.

The car ride is comfortable and smooth... Actually, somehow I feel that my S550 (20" wheels, with AIRMATIC) rides smoother than my E550 (18" wheels, without AIRMATIC.)
The W222 is a big car, and the 20" wheels fit the proportion just right (personally I think the car actually can use even biggest wheels.)
The W222 S class is a big boat on wheels. Anything under 19” will have allot of body roll. All W222 S63 comes standard with 20” like my and compares to an S550, it rides allot smoother on city streets where more cornering is required. Run flats are loud and noisy, don’t use them because that is what Mercedes road side it for.
