I don't know if this has been posted here yet, but an article posted today on Autoguide.com says the US will get a V6 model (S450) and a new V8 (S560) in the updated 2018 S-Class.
I already post this couple month earlier, if you call MB customer care directly they will tell you 3 month ago that they will release 450 and 560 in fall
I too have heard rumors about the new 6 cylinder engine option in USA using the old v6 instead of the highly anticipated I6 M256 engine.
FYI, the engine in the S450-4matic is the same engine as was in the old E class but this version is turbocharged. I had the naturally aspirated version in my E350 RWD and I found it to be. Quite adequate for the old E.
It doesn't have the get up and go that I'm sure the S560 does but then again most people don't buy an S class car to take it down to the track, and if they do the zero to 60 times are only 1 second faster in the S560.
IMO, MB's S class models are worth their price, the rest of the model line for the most part isn't worth the price. I had a 2018 E300-4matic which I kept for about 6 months and it was overpriced, underpowered and the interior was kind of cheap looking, but the worst part of the car was how underpowered it is.
I am told you can now order an E400 but I have no idea what type 6 cylinder engine it has in it. If it's the much talked about I-6, I'd wait until the next model year before plunking down your green to make sure MB did its home work and the few bugs it will undoubtedly have in it will have been worked out.
Good luck.

All of the "400" and "450" cars will likely switch over to the I6 for 2019 to match the new CLS450. The "43" cars will also switch over too I think. It will be a lot of activity at Mercedes during 2018. I can't imagine all the training that tech have to go through.
