I'm not so happy with the 7G in my 2015 and wondering about the 9G.

I have a 9G in my new 450 GLS.
In my opinion, it shifts way too often, and when it does not need to. It is a bit annoying.
That said, I have the 7G in my S600, and it is a dream.

It really depends on the software implementation of the 9G in the S-Class.
I drive our 2017 SL550 (9G) often back to back with our S550 (7G). Both have the same engine (apart from slightly different ECU software) so I have a pretty good comparison between the two.
The 9G is definitely a better transmission and has more capabilities to change its shifting patterns via dynamic drive. The 7G implementation in the S is a simple one; E or S which only performs a very simple adjustment.
The 9G shifts quite fast and very aggressively in Sport+
