I'm not sure if the 2018 S-class offers this, but the active side bolster is being used on the E-class as a SAFETY feature as well. In a side impact collision sensors will trigger the outer seat bolster to inflate. This is supposed to move your body a few inches toward the center of the car and away from the door to hopefully reduce the chance of injury during a side impact.
