GD, MF, POS GLASS ROOFS!
I realize that MB was not mentioned in this article and that MB roofs are probably of higher quality. However, the idea of huge sections of glass shattering over the heads of occupants—no matter what the cause, is something that is very unappealing, wouldn’t you say? The S Class should be available with three roof options: A plain, steel roof, a traditional sun/moon roof and the Panorama Roof. True luxury is having things exactly as YOU want them.

The problem is volume:: the S-class has insufficient volume to allow for such choices, unless you want to add somewhere in the range of $5000 to every car before picking an option.
The production line has to have separate bays to install the various options. These bays have to be amortized over the number of cars made.

How likely is it that a roof shatters? I've always had glass sunroofs for the most part and only had one shatter and that the Glass T tops on my 1981 Chevy Monte Carlo Turbo (Yes, Turbo, you read that right, they only made those 2 years, had the grand national motor in it) Anyhow, I was driving along 95 through the Bronx in NY where all those bridges are and was in a traffic jam and some Yahoo had a big boulder over his head and threw it off the bridge right onto my Glass tops, smashed them, not fun. I think that was 1985. They really cleaned up that area, it use to be downright scary driving through there back in the 80's.

My first new purchase had glass T-tops. That was a 1987 Nissan 300ZX. Every car since has had a glass moon/sun roof. Nissan/Toyota/Jeep/VW/Audi/MB. Never had one fail. Panorama in my ‘10 E350 has one. No problem. My 2011 S had one. Just sold it. Know what?. The glass never broke. Damndest thing.
