Odd issue with Michelin RFT tires

Noticed that my front tires are wearing kinda weird. Its a 2015 with 18K miles on the odo. Rubber looks to be peeling off in small chunks. Took it to MB dealer and they said they have seen this before and that it will not effect the performance of the tires. Cannot see cord or anything like that it is like a small piece of the rubber is delaminating from itself. Suggested an alignment so I will be getting one of those done. Never seen this before.

Take it up with Michelin. That seems weird.

I had this issue on my Continentals on my E 350. Third set of them since I owned the car new. Dealer said about the same thing as you heard. I kept the tires on the car till replacement time and had no issues except I knew how funky they looked. In the end I replaced them with
the same brand. I have never had a problem in 6+ years. Not sure what is on my S class.

I usually lease my cars for three years, driving them around 12K per year. Since MB will nick you if you return the car with tires needing replacement and since I like driving on the first half of tire life, I replace my tires after about 18K miles. And since I drive in a conservative, law abiding manner, the take off tires are usually in excellent condition. Being my dear departed father’s son, I can usually get about $400.00 for the used set on Craigslist. We drive these big, expensive, luxury cars. Why skimp on tires, trying to get the last few miles out of them? New tires ride better, are quieter and safer. Splurge on a nice new set of Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus conventionals. You’ll love them!

I have tried selling tires on CL in the past and it is typically a waste of time. Tires still have most of the tread on them so it seems silly and wasteful to just replace them at this point. Taking the car in for an alignment this week to see if that is the problem.

Update - Took the car to discount tires and they are going to give me a credit for two new front tires. Basically charging me for the miles so I am good with that. Interestingly I asked them about going to non RFT tires and they advised against it because of the weight of my car. While the S550 is a car it weighs as much as an SUV at close to 5K lbs. The RFT tires have a much higher weight capacity and can handle the lateral loads that this car experiences. So I will probably just stick with the RTF Michelins. Honestly I cannot tell much of a difference in road noise between this W222 and my old W221 with non RFT Michelin AS3 tires.

Glad you are happy with your RFT. As for the tire shop saying that RFT will handle the weight of the car better than conventionals, that is just plain B.S. on their part. All the big tire companies make conventional tires for cars as big or bigger than the S Class. If there was even a hint of a problem, they wouldn't produce them.
