Resonator Delete
Hello All! I’m new to Mercedes and the forum. Today on my S-class, I had the resonators removed but the car is still almost dead silent. I’m interested in removing the muffler and reinstalling the resonating if the muffler delete is too loud. But I’m curious, has anyone removed the electronic valve actuators, leaving the muffler? Did it improve the sound and also how do you unplug or remove the valve actuator connector to try out the sound?

When I was like 7 years old, my buddies and I would attach old playing cards to the forks of our bikes with clothespins. The spokes of the wheels would hit the cards, making a noise. The faster we pedaled, the louder the sound. It was keen! When I was 20, I got a ‘66 Corvette, 327, 365hp with factory side exhaust. That car sounded really cool. By the time I was 27, I grew up, got my first MB, a ‘72 350SL and decided that silence was indeed golden. Removing mufflers from an S Class? Didn’t you ever put playing cards on the fork of your bike?

Here is the guy who did the resonator delete. He didnt get enough noise from just that and eventually added an exhaust. Unfortunately, I dont think there is a clip of just the resonator delete but he described it by saying you could barely hear it in the cabin (different thread). Hope this helps and let us know how you make out. I definitely want to do this too at some point...

Ok thanks TKelley! It's true, a resonator delete is a waste of money. There is virtually no difference in sound. I've been researching the electronic actuators located inside the mufflers and deleting the secondary cats. I'll keep y'all posted!

The Standard S and the Sport S W222 do not have Electronic actuators. That is only found on the AMG S63....

Interesting you should say that.... I think we are both possibly correct. In looking at some people that have done Exhaust upgrades, s550 has Vacuum based actuators and the S63 has electronic valve actuators..... I will have to go under there and look for myself.... Hmmmm…. That should explain why the S63 is a bit louder. On the s63, when in sport mode, i think the actuators open fully mechanically. On the S550, only under load they open and is probably variable based on Vacuum/load.

No, I haven’t done anything else to my exhaust other than the resonator delete. But I have noticed that over time, since the delete, the exhaust has developed a nice slightly louder/deeper sound upon startup.

As far as I know, the fastest way to get a W222 to spout an exhaust note is to drive the S65. I never thought of the S class attracting buyers looking for a loud exhaust. I’d like to see a video of the exhaust note after actuator removal.
