Talk about variety!

Very true! We just got rid of our X5 Msport for a 19 MDX last year since we wanted a third row. Driving experience is totally different. Loved driving the X5 the MDX is a nice car but just ok to drive.
We will probably check out the M50 X7 or the new GLS in a couple years.

The new GLE is really nice I got one as a loaner a few weeks ago and was impressed. The technology and luxury is phenomenal. I had a Laramie that I sold since I didn't ever drive it (20k miles in 6.5 years) because I preferred my E550 so much. It was a nice truck with lots of luxury, but I grew tired of it - no way I'd choose it oven an S-class. The new GLE is definitely bigger than my E and may fit your needs, or the new GLS is coming if you need even more space. The GLE580 should be a beast.

I don't think you can judge a bad engine or car after four years. Other than blatant problems, poor design and engineering manifests after the car has 60k+ miles on it. This is why I avoid BMWs these days. I can tell you the laundry list of problems that will happen to that 2014 X5 at 70 to 80K miles even with routine maintenance. This is the beauty of leasing and returning. Limited headaches. Also the reason why the used selling price of a 3 1/2 year old Hyundai Genesis is higher than the used price of a 3 1/2 year old BMW 5 series which had an initial sticker price 15K higher.

As to the original post, I'd always go for the functional car. Get the big SUV or truck

2019 S63 4Matic+, 2018 E400 Cabrio, wardens car.
Buy what you like. I went from a Tundra to a 2015 S550 4Matic and the Merc is like a lazyboy on wheels. Nothing better for road trips and daily driving. I owned trucks for 15 years and really used them but as I got older I found myself never using the bed and being a hassle to park. And the S550 is no slouch off the line or on the freeway. It will keep up with most of the cars on the road. As to reliability, I have had two S550's and they were both very reliable. I purchased my last one 2 years ago and I now have 33K miles on it with no troubles at all other than oil changes, tires and brakes. I just did the front brakes myself for around 400 in parts. They are great cars.

Thank you for your response. In reference to the last part of your comment, I think I will probably end up going with the truck, keep it for quite a few years (car gods willing of course) and when I get a little more older, get an S. I posed this same question on a Ram forum and of course everyone said I should get the truck, I think my immediate need really is for the truck because of the space, etc. But I will say that when I test drove the Merc, it felt so right! This will be re-visited, just can’t say when right now.

My X5 50i had 85k miles as an aside. Bought it with 65k based on the research I did. There's guy/gals on that forum north of 100K and still trucking as I still periodically still check in. Late 2013 production and we're about late 2019 so 6 years old at this point, thats a solid track record IMO.
