Catalytic converter for 2015 S550 4Matic

I am certainly glad I decided to purchase the MB extended warranty for $3,450. I was having an issue with intermittent check engine light and took it to the dealer and they said I needed a new catalytic converter. They ordered one from Germany and tell me the part alone is over $3,000. The car was running fine it would just be an intermittent yellow check engine light that was coming on and off They said the diagnostics required a new catalytic converter.
Has anyone else had these issues with the catalytic converter ? I’m not sure other than poor emissions if I would notice any issues.

Good to know. How long did it take to get the part? There telling me there isn’t one in USA and it needs to come from Germany and not sure how long it will take to arrive.

It didnt take mine very long. If I remember correctly it was at the dealer for less than a week, but they also didnt tell me that it would have to come from Deutschland.

FWIW, "emission control systems come with a different warranty (Federal) than the normal new MB 4 year/50k mile coverage. In certain situations it can last up to 8 years.

Not good, should not be failing so soon. Most third party warranties (even the best) exclude exhaust components and catalytic converters. I saw Mercedes has a 8 year federal emissions, does this include the catalytic converter?

I am not clear if it was covered by CPO or the emissions warranty, the dealer just advised that it was covered.

I have 47,000 miles on the car. I hope this resolves it, it only occurs about once a week and then goes out and it happens again.

I have the same exact issue. Mercedes told me it is not covered by extended warranty and my 2016 S550 is CPO. I'm glad I didn't wast any money buying 2 to 3 years extended warranty. I will replace it out of pocket but I can get it a lot cheaper for 1.5K rather than 3K

Interesting that the plugs and coils also fall under the 8/80k warranty

a) how many miles?
b) what kind of gas do you put in it?
c) how many miles per gallon were you getting?
d) does the car eat any oil between changes?

Mine just failed with only 22k miles on my car. Unfotunately it is just 5 months past the 8 year warranty. How much did it cost you to have yours replaced? was it done at a dealer or independant shop?

Check Engine Lights (CEL) occur for several reasons. A code needs to be reported to be sure you are comparing apples to apples. Many CEL conditions will not affect performance/mileage, and possibly not even emissions. Which is the reason they exist in the first place.

You can get a CAT for pretty cheap if you shop dealers/look online. Most shops can replace the CAT its not a difficult job. Some people would take this opportunity to run catless downpipes and go with a aftermarket solution.

Most aftermarket GOOD extended warranties do not cover the cats either. I have had warranties from Fidelity, CNA, Ally, Lexus with their "platinum bumper to bumper coverages" and each one excluded the catalytic convertor as a covered component.

Knock on wood, I've never had to replace a cat on one of my cars, not even the one I drove to 176k miles. Here's a page that describes how they can go bad ... https://www.walkerexhaust.com/suppor...ter-fails.html

The technician's computer showed the following result:

MED177-N3/10 Motor electronics "MED177" for combustion engine "M278" (ME)
P042000 - The efficiency of the catalytic converter (cylinder bank 1) is insufficient

technican said there was a problem with the Right side Catalystic Converter efficiency "caused by metals in catalytic converter depleting, allowing it to not clear exhaust fumes."

Is this something I need to worry about? or are they just trying to fleece me? Seems kind of wrong to need to replace a catalytic converter when my car only has 22,000 miles (2015 model purchased in 2014 - so just outside the 8 year warranty on exhaust) Thanks in advance for any advice.

As posted previously in this thread, discuss this with MB dealer CC is covered under warranty for 8 years / 80,000 miles whichever comes first, see attachment. Out of warranty, make a deal with Scrappy Larry...
