Heated Windshield Function
I have a S560 with option 597, Heated Windshield. I took a rock chip and crack to the windshield. Does anyone know how the electrically heated windshield works and whether this accident will affect the function operation? Can it be filled or does the entire windshield need to be replaced?

When my heated one got cracked I made sure it was replaced OEM by the dealer. Safelite said they had a "heated" windshield, but I doubt it. And I wouldn't let them do it to begin with lol

Mercedes Benz just confirmed that an electrically heated windshield showing rock chip damage, which includes a crack, is not repairable and must be replaced. And after replacement the sensors/cameras must be re-calibrated for the subsystems to function correctly.

I finally had the windshield replaced and all of the sensors re-calibrated. The windshield was $2800. I was told it was that expensive because of the heating element embedded into the glass. The heating is performed by a transparent film in one of the glass layers and not with wires as I had thought. Fortunately it was covered by my Comprehensive policy and I had zero deductible. Final price for the repair was $3850.

Congratulations on a successful repair. Cost is not a surprise.
My wife's new BMW had a cracked windshield replaced by the dealer, using OEM glass. Cost was about 1/3 of the amount posted above. Add for larger size S-Class, add for heated feature, and add for M-B factor, and the cost is easily arrived at.
Glass is thinner in vehicles in the modern era, for weight and cost savings to the manufacturers. As a result, cracks are more common than in the past, notwithstanding stronger glass material.
