CPO with 23k miles and now I need brakes + rotors?
FYI: When I traded my '16 S550 4matic with 36,000 miles in for my '19 S63 in late 2018, I had never replaced pads or rotors the entire time I owned the car for just over three years (custom ordered it new). I understand from the dealer that they replaced the front and rear pads/rotors when they CPO'ed the car for the next owner. I believe the brake wear is due more to how the car is driven vs "they are known not to last long on the w222".
I certainly do not baby the brakes but I am mindful of how I use my brakes. As I stated, it has more to do with how one uses the brakes (and the car of course) than the comment of they just wear faster than one thinks. IMHO the w222 brakes do not wear any faster than other cars or trucks I have owned (not a scientific measure but I am just not hard on brakes based on how I drive). I can wear brakes out just as fast as the next guy as I am known to use the brakes hard on race tracks but not for street driving.

I just found out today at the MB dealer that my car has brand new brake pads when it was certified mid January this year just days before I bought the car, it only had 16.5 K miles on it. Anyhow thats a relief that I won't have to worry about brakes for quite a while to come. The service writer at the dealer gave me a printout of all that was done to the car today at the MB dealer since it was bought by the original owner 11/11/2016. I suspect to go through half or more of the original brakes in just 16.5K miles that it must have been perhaps an older brake riding person who owned my car. The other clue to that was the XM radio presets were the 1940's swing dance music station and the Polka station lol.
