A lot of S-class owners have reported having to replace their windshields. Here's a POV video of a pro who replaces windshields for a living. It's definitely more work than I expected with all of the trim, cameras, and wiper assembly that needs to be removed first.

My advice would be to anyone who gets a chip in their windshield that is smaller than the size of a quarter to immediately take to it a repair shop like Safelite, or call them and they will come to you to fix it. It's a lot less of a hassle if they can fix the chip before it spreads. Once the chip gets too big then they will have to replace the entire windshield. If you wait, every mile you drive and every bump you hit on the road will put more stress on the windshield and cause the chip to grow. I have GEICO and they let you schedule an appointment on their website at your nearest Safelite. If they're able to fix the chip then GEICO pays for it.
