Got $30K off

I purchased 2019 S450 in November. The dealer was discounting the car $30k with MB offering $20K of the $30K. I hope I can get the W223 in 2023 if I am not too far upside down. Opinions?

You got $30K off a brand new S450? What was the MSRP? What interior & exterior colors? What part of the country? Just curious.

MSRP $102,825. Black on Black. in Alabama. I called around and there were similar offers in Tennessee as well.

Well, you got a spectacular deal and should be in a great position come trade-in time. Congratulations.

Your 30k will be lost in 6 months. No such thing as a "good deal" on these largely depreciating cars. If you have money to burn, go ahead and buy new or less be prepared to have a mild heart attack when you see the trade in value.

I think most guys (and ladies) here, are not going to get a heart attack when seeing the depreciation on their S-Class , most have been long time customers, with multiple purchases in the past and by now very familiar with that fact.
They continue to order new cars and long time ago already came to grips with that painful reality.
....but to some, car fanatics like most of us here, that factor is just one part (however unpleasant) of the new car experience, frugality is not their number one goal, it's important but not important enough to deny themselves the pleasure and satisfaction of ordering and getting a brand spanking new car, built exactly to their personal wants.

Congrats! I live in the Birmingham area. Which dealer in the state did you go to, if you don't mind me asking?

If people were really concerned with resale/trade values there would be no S class forum. This is an expensive hobby, I think most people here understand the math.

Sorry, but that is incorrect. $30k off a new S class is a fantastic deal, especially one priced at $102. In 3 years that car will probably still be worth $50k plus. That's Honda level depreciation. And try to not be so negative, especially now...

The Nashville Mercedes sales manager used to be in Atlanta with BMW and I did 2 BMW deals with him. He is terrific to work with. I will call him next Summer when I have to make up my mind again with 760 or S63

Don’t stay at that 5 Star resort, there’s a Motel 6 just a few miles away. Don’t dine at that Michelin Rated restaurant, there’s a McDonald’s just down the road. Silver Oak Napa Valley Cab? Why not Two-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe’s? They’re both made from red grapes, right?

Luxury items are expensive. Some are horrendously overpriced, but I happen to think that S Class cars are a true bargain when one thinks about what it takes to design, engineer and produce them. Thank goodness for the economy of scale. Saving 30% on one of these cars is an absolutely SENSATIONALLY GREAT deal. If one doesn’t think so, then I guess we should all be riding everywhere on a bus or riding a bicycle. What did I work so hard for so many years for? So I could afford the things I want and need. I don’t need an S Class, but it sure is nice having one!

Work hard, play hard. No one needs a Mercedes, it's a splurge. 7 series depreciation is huge as well. And if only German, the GTI is a lot of car for the money if that's your concern. As for Silver Oak, when I was there last not only was the wine fantastic the people working there were super nice. It was there that I learned that flying into Sacramento is WAY better than SFO.

If you don't see a need to buy a luxury vehicle that's fine. But don't come on here like a fool and blast other people for enjoying luxury. People don't buy a Mercedes because it's a great financial decision, they buy them because they WANT to. As Streamliner said, you burn money on many things in life from brand name products vs generic to a larger place to live to anything but tap water to drink. Coming onto a forum for $100k cars and saying it's crazy to buy one is about as dumb as it gets. You would be better served finding a used Honda forum where you can sing all day about your resale value.

Never said anything against buying one. Simply stating the facts about $. You should chill out there, old man - You seem overly proud about your over 100k purchases.

I think you clearly said "money to burn/ prepare for a heart attack" and it's "crazy to see hard earned money burned". If that isn't saying anything against buying one then what is? And what the heck did I say about my car that makes me seem overly proud??

As somebody who likes nice cars like these I am grateful to those who buy them new so that I can eventually afford one in the used market.

"Upside down" means you still owe more on your loan than the car is worth at trade-in. If you paid cash or leased it, upside down doesn't mean anything. You can run out the loan amortization and know exactly how much of the loan principal you will still owe at any point in the loan, up to the full payoff. Predicting trade-in value into the future is harder to get right. Look at 4 year old S-Classes now to get an idea, but it will still just be a prediction. Lots of unknowns looking 4 years into the future at this point. Will the S450 be as desirable as a S550 in 4 years? Will the new W223 depress the secondary market for used W222s? Will the economy recover, especially the auto industry? About all you can say for certain is that the $30K you saved up front will put you in better shape than somebody who paid full MSRP.

Brand new S450 fro $72k?? You did great. If you can afford one in 2023? Ridiculous to comment without knowing your financials.

Financial discussions on cars are tiresome and repetitive beyond sharing discounts or financing/lease rates/tips with each other. Who cares what others think of depreciation, wether buying new vs used it worth it, etc.
Different people have different priorities. What matters is that you enjoy the car you selected and feel good with your purchase. Simple as that.

I’m sorry, why are you on this forum? There is not a single reason for you to be here blasting “old men” for their financial choices. It is so disrespectful and pointless and shows a plain lack of common sense. Please attempt to get attention somewhere else, or preferably not at all.
