Exhaust pipe baffle
On my newly acquired 2015 S550 I notice when looking in the dual exhaust pipes on each side that one of the pipes has a baffle that seems to be controlled by a vacuum line. What causes these baffles to open, is it actuated only under sport mode or all the time over certain RPM's. I know that my Z4 has a vacuum baffle on the right exhaust that stays closed when cold starting then opens after a few minutes. If you remove the hose from the pipe and plug the line, the baffle stays open all the time...deeper cold start sound. So, once again, what is the purpose of the Merc baffles, do you guys mod them to stay open and then, how.

To my knowledge, only under load for the standard S550. The S63 has Electronic Valves as does several after market exhaust kits that can be opened at will.

I can say that on my 16 Maybach it is dead quiet engine noise till you floor the gas pedal and then you hear a roar. It would be reasonable that there is a flap in the exhaust that allows these changes to take place. I do know on my AMG GTC you can select different exhaust noises with a button on the console.
