Is now the time to upgrade?

I currently drive a 2015 S550 (123k sticker, 42k miles). I'm looking at a 2018 S560 (128k sticker, 22k miles, CPO). Dealer offered me 42k for my car and a sale price of 74k for theirs. Their's is pretty loaded with what I want. Question, is the price worth it especially because of incentives right now (1.99% and two payments covered)? Or should I wait until next year after the W223 comes out? Will that effect things significantly? Theirs seems to be priced pretty low...

The W222's will take a hit after the W223 comes out. Keep in mind you are already "invested" in the W222 chassis so it will take a hit at the same time but just not as much as the S560. In your case you need to trade the risk a big repair expense with your current car vs the differential in depreciation plus whether you just would rather have the newer car.

That is where my head is at too. I get a warranty, I need brakes pretty soon, and I've done no other maintenance to the car since I bought it 2 years ago. At 42k miles, I'm sure I have some stuff coming up...

That's also where my head is. I dont know if there is anywhere else to go after this. Maybe an S63 one day? Maybe the new W223? I feel like I'd be very happy with the face-lift W222 for a long time. I test drove one and really enjoyed the new engine/transmission combo...

50k miles means spark plugs and engine air filter on most MBs. Over $1000 if you have these things done at the dealer. Plus brakes as you mentioned. What about tires?

Buying a first year new platform MB seems to be a high risk endeavor, read through the X/V167 section of this site. If it were me, I would trade now for a W222 or wait until the second or third year of W223 production.

just spend $700 for plugs installed on the W212, I can see the S being ugly as well. Tires are about 2 years old at this point...

Honestly no, it sounded just as quiet as mine. I sure did like the 9 speed transmission though.

The Tech on the 2018 up is so much better. The adaptive cruise was greatly improved, the screens better, lot's of things. As long as you don't absolutely love the 223 and think you'll be disappointed if you don't get on of those I'd do this deal with the 2018 as long as the car is good. I have a 2017 that I'm really happy with but know I'm missing out on better tech vs a 2018 but the car I have is mint and I got it with only 16K miles on it for a deal a year ago. I'm up to 26K mile now a year later. Car is still mint. I have been tempted though to try and do a deal on a 2018 up as I have a 2019 E class 450 and the tech is even a lot better in that car than my 2017 S550.

You are paying $32K for 20K miles and 3 years--incentives or not. That is $1,600 per 1,000 miles.

So::
a) if you are tired of your current car--it might be worth it.
b) if something on the newer car has become a requirement--it might be worth it.

To me, it would not be worth it (assuming there is nothing known to be wrong with the current car.)

Do you have ELW on your 2015 S550? If you do. then you can probably keep it for another year or two until it expires and you shouldn't expect any many problems or repair bills with only 42k miles.. The W223 will be upgrade. for a year or two and prices for the W222 models will come down. But if have an itch to get the 2018. I would go for it. As others have already mentioned, the 2018 face lift has some revisions that are worth the upgrade, including the improved driver assistance package.

Only if you can stomach the new interior.

Yeah, like a tiny 3-spoke steering wheel that belongs in a sports car.
If I had wanted something like that, I would have bought an AMG.
Makes you feel like you're driving a small A class, not a flagship luxury sedan that needs completely different approach.

I had a 2013 S550, 2015 S550, 2018 S560 and now a 2020 S560. To me, the face lifted model in 2018 was a significant improvement over the earlier model. The new engine and 9-speed were so much better, smoother, etc. I really liked the 2018, but have been blown away with the much more quiet 2020. If it were me, I would pass on the 2018 and try to get into a 2019. I believe there were significant improvements to weatherstripping, insulation, etc. at some point after my fairly early production 2018 was built. Good luck.

Everyone's mileage here is different. My take on it is that my 2018 is DEAD QUIET inside, as was my 2012 and my 2008 = all S63's. Some people are more obsessive about noise levels, to me, I could care less. My other car is a Porsche and it's pretty noisy, I couldn't give a dam*. I love it. Some passengers think after a few hours in it that it's a bit noisy, I don't notice it at all.

In any case, none of us have the slightest ability to choose for you. You're going to have to drive a 2018 for 45 minutes back to back with your own car and decide if it's worth the difference. We could never come up with this answer for you. To me, if you're thinking about it, you want it, you posted it here, hell... just go for it. You deserve it, and you can afford it or you wouldn't be posting about it. Life's too short, especially now with viruses running rampant, to put off cool purchases like this. I LOVE MY 2018 to death. I may never, ever buy a new Mercedes and just fix this and keep fixing it even out of warranty, even when it's expensive to do so. I loved it so much I bought a 10 year/100,000 mi warranty for it when I first bought it.

Great great car with minor issues, but all cars have minor issues. You just get them fixed and live with the others. It's hardly a thing to worry about. Also, if you love the color on the new car, definitely just do it.

I guess my plan will be sell my 2017 S550 outright next spring and drive my wagon the rest of the summer and then the following fall get a really good used low mileage 2020 S560. I was really contemplating trading my 2017 S550 in for a 2018 S450 which has about the same options as the tech is so much better starting in 2018, but in reality I might be even more happy driving my 2017 S550 because of the motor and then stepping right up to a 2020 S560 when the time comes. The 2021 is not even an option for me as I would destroy the center screen the first time I pulled my wheelchair across the center console, it just would not work.

Good advice, now you got me thinking about a 2018 S560 that I really like that is currently available at the same dealer I bought my 2017 S550 a year ago. It is Maganite Black which is really kind growing on me as I look at it. They want 78K for that car its got around 17K miles on it and has the options I want. It would set me back though my car plus at least 25K. Where as the 2018 S450 they have has the same mileage but another extra year of warrantee and could that car for my car plus around 13 grand. The S450 does not have the Amg line and has 18 inch wheels and looks kinda plain jane. I really don't think I'd be happy with that car. In need more bling and more power. I have even thought about the a good used 2018 S63 amg Your S63 looks like a beautiful car, that is definitely a keeper.

I know you've said this a few times and I appreciate you being careful with your words here. Is there any objective proof (press release or otherwise) that a 2020 W222 had significant improvements re weather-stripping/insulation versus a 2018 W222?

None that I have seen. If you may recall, back in 2018, in this forum, there was a fellow who was over-the-top upset about his new 2018, with outside noise entering the cabin. I think he may have sold the car over the issue. I fell into the category of “ignorance is bliss,” as I felt my 2018 was pretty quiet, UNTIL I drove my 2020. To me, the difference may not be day and night, but it is substantial. I know that may folks don’t care—and some would actually prefer more engine and/or exhaust sounds entering the cabin, but in a luxury sedan, to me, silence is golden.

Fair point, although sorry if OT but if my memory is correct you were also the one who was a big proponent of the Bridgestone Turanza Quiettrack - a tire that I'm thinking of switching my vehicle to as it seems to be the "piece de resistance" when it comes to tires, even in winter driving performance. If you are the person who switched to them, do they still have your seal of approval, and any feedback on winter performance for that tire?

Thank you!

Yeah, I’m the one. I have had several sets of Bridgestone tires. First the Serenity, then the updated Serenity Plus and now the model that replaced those, the QuietTrack. I actually had a set of the QuietTracks on the 2018 and arranged as part of the deal on the 2020 to have a set put on the new car. My favorite tires, I just love them! As for winter performance, I never drive in anything worse than rain and they handle it very nicely.
