I'm at about 48k miles on 2015 s550, I've put about 3500 miles since buying used in February. Not to sound obtuse, but what is "Service A9?" Anything dealer required, or can my indi-mechanic do it?
Mercedes-Benz Service A is a required maintenance package that needs to be taken care of around once every year or 10,000 miles, though these estimates may vary depending on your specific model, your personal driving habits, and the climate you live in. Included with Service A are the following:

I know Service A is an oil change, but was does the number 9 mean? Thank you.
Isn't that simply indicating service due in year 9 of the car's life?
Not necessary year. It’s the 9th service. Could be in year 9 if you drive less than 10k a year, since service is due annually at minimum.
But if you drive a lot a year, you could have service A9 due in year 5 for example.
It goes: A1, B1, A2, B2, A3, B3, etc, so essentially it’s the 9th Service A due. That car must’ve had a lot of services done (or reset).
You should see what other service was done ot the car in the past. At 50k I believe is when the tranny fluid should be changed and spark plugs. I had my 50k service done under pre-paid service contract and although I had only 35k at the time the dealers was able to do both of those services for me due to age vs. mileage.
Go into the ASSYST PLUS menu on the dash and it should list which services are needed.
My W204 recently showed that service BH was due which I had no idea what it meant. go into ASSYST PLUS and scroll thru until it lists the service 1-20. I have read this list is the same for all Mercedes models. I dont know how to get into your specific menu but ill post how I got in mine. The services listed for mine 2,3, 11, 13 made perfect sense and lined up with the services listed in the Maintenance Manual since my car just turned 150,000 miles and was due for a new fuel filter and replace the coolant.
