50,000 miles was the interval in the recent past, see attached. The latest model maintenance booklet isn't easily found on the MBUSA website. I googled and didn't come up with anything.

46500 miles or every 4 years, according to the manual, for S550. For the facelift model - S560, based on the document that @chassis shared, it looks that it is still the same (almost) --> 50K miles or 5 years.

Depends on where you drive. The engine will compensate the air/fuel ratio to keep things running smooth... Old school test, Take one out, hold it up to the sun. If you can see light through all pleats, statistically good to go. You can tap out any sand / dirt while you have it out... If you have OCD like me, change it every 3 to 4 years. Millage may vary.
