Worn rear tires

Last year I purchased my Certified 15 S550 4Matic with 34000mi new OEM 19" Perelli Run Flat tires all around. Now 10000 mi. later I'm down to 3-4/32s on the rears. I drive this S class like it pretends to be, calm and stately. Does this sound right? I know on my Z4 that I will do 2 rears to 1 front but it's rear wheel drive and aggressive driving. Question is, I really dont mind the Run Flats so replacing the rears with Michelin or Continentals, which would give me more service. By the way, tire pressure is 34lb and wear is even across, alignment is good, car tracks perfect at all speeds.

Was about to say adjustable camber rods but you said your wear is even across which is not what I was expecting. A lot of us have issues with the inner sidewall of the rear tires getting eaten up and failing. The solution for that is adjustable camber rods.

You might wish to have the alignment checked to see if the settings are causing early tire wear.

When I was looking for my now '16 S coupe, I noticed many Carfax reports showing tire replacement on new S models in the first 5-10k miles. I was informed by MB it was considered normal due to the car's weight and type or tire (run flats).

Thats what my service advisor told me about my Maybach when it went through the first rear tires. Now my issue with that point of view is the rear tires carry far less weight than the front tires and when my rear tires would fail all the rest of the tire tread was in very good condition meaning it should have gone many more miles.

Ditch the crappy and overly-expensive RFT's and put some proper tires on your car. I've got these and they have been absolutely fantastic. Very quiet at all speeds, stick like glue to dry roads, and handle well in the rain....not to mention significantly cheaper and last twice as long as the RFT's. No experience with them in the snow, but I do have a dedicated set of wheels and tires for winter duty. They have a 50k mileage warranty, but I believe that gets cut in half when running staggered sizes.

What is the strategy for flats with no spare? Just call AAA? I am thinking that my Michelin VR runflats are not great and would love some full summer high performance tires but what are you thinking Dave on the VERY RARE flat, I think I have had 1 flat in the last 25 years where I was out driving and had to put on a spare.

When I need new tires, I'll be replacing the runflats with regular tires. I will run w/o a spare. I've never had use for a spare and have been driving since '59, that's 62 years. Others will disagree and add a spare. To each his own. I do pay particular attention to my tires doing rotations, etc. If a tire is in any way questionable, it gets replaced. I see some tires on parked cars that are in poor condition and such owners need a backup for sure.
