How many windshield replacements?

I'm looking at a 2015 S550 with ~65k miles and MB records show 4 windshield replacements! No accidents, just a steady cadence of windshield replacements about every two years or so, along with regular maintenance visits.

Does that strike anyone as odd? This is a HUD equipped car, in case that makes a difference.

Yes it is odd. My car is the same age and mileage and is on its original.

When I bought my 2016 S-Class in 2020, the car was on its second windshield. I have since had Safelite replace it again, which brought the total to 3 within 5 years. Part of me thinks that it's the car's aero and the rake of the windshield that causes debris to strike as opposed to being lifting over the car and part of me thinks it's just much thinner glass.

Probably luck of the draw--with a finicky owner--and generous insurance company--in a crappy environment.

4 years and 50k miles got a chip and crack. Insurance company refused to do OEM. Fought them and they finally agreed. Cost was 5x safe lite.

What differentiates the MB OEM windshields from the after-market units?

Maybe thickness, internal Heated elements, tint percentage, sun shade, Ultra-Violet protective/ refractive coatings, two untreated areas for radar detectors and toll transponders? These would be good arguments to insist on OEM windshield replacements. I have noticed what appears to be a ultra-thin metallic grid 2-3 mm pattern in the glass when the light hits it just right. I'm assuming this is the grid heater elements. Thanks.

Not normal at all. My 2017 S63 had 80K miles on it when I traded it off and the original wipers were still working every bit as good as the day I bought it new.

My car's Carfax showed a windshield replacement at 26,000 miles (previous owner). My Porsche buddies always complain about German windshields using 'soft glass'.

It might have to do with which city/state - location the car was in. Certain cities are known for more road debris or might have a major arterial highway going through it, which in turn would cause more semi-trucks to drive through increasing the chances of getting windshield strikes.

No more MB:(
Odd, but if the original owner drove majority of the time on the highway then it's possible. Unusual nonetheless.

Wow, that thread sure tells the story! I'll double check that my insurance will cover these without deductible...

Yeah, broken windshields is almost a way of life these days. I started to get broken windshields about 10 years ago. Went through 3 or 4 over six years with my previous car. Had to replace it on my current car two years ago after only 1 year of ownership, and I got recently hit with a rock again leaving three small cracks. It was fixable this time and it's on the passenger side out of my line of sight and too small to justify replacement. I think the only reason the current windshield survived almost two years is because I haven't been driving as much over the last two years and the roads were practically empty during the lockdowns. Here in Cali windshields fall under comprehensive, including deductible, so I lowered my deductible to $100 several years ago after growing tired of paying $500 out of my pocket every time. Now it's more of an inconvenience when it happens. My dealership actually replaces windshields in-house with factory trained technicians, so all the repair and calibration is under one roof done to factory standards, and I always insist on factory glass. Except for one time, my insurance company has always covered the factory glass. With today's cameras and HUDs the standards for the glass are higher, and usually the aftermarket glass doesn't meet it, so getting it covered is less of an issue.

My 2015 had several chips that I had repaired. Glass did not seem any better or worse than any of the other cars I have owned in the past 10 years.

ANOTHER FLAW

As the owner of a S550, and appreciating the performance and comfort of the car, I continue to be amazed at the number of flaws associated with the brand.
Where are the engineers?
