Purchase advice

Hey gang,

really hoping for some expert advice since this is my biggest purchase (I’m 24)

I’m super excited about these two vehicles I’ve been looking to purchase, only problem is I can only buy one.

2015 S63 AMG vs 2015 S 550

S63: 93,000 Miles, tuned to push 750hp, good maintenance and service history
S550: 38,000 miles, 1 owner, excellent condition

just wanna know the scopes of how much I’d expect to spend with the S63, it’s only $3k more but the mileage and tuning on it, I’m expecting a fair amount of spending in the next 25k miles.

so please advise me on what you think I should get, of course the monster is so tempting but I’m also not trying to spend all my money on a car.

Thank you !!!

reconsider and get none of these.

Of the 2, the s550 is the safest but it's a high priced benz $100k+ OUT of warranty. You should be prepared to lose your a$$ on this type of car without an extended warranty and I bet you don't wrench your own engines.

what amount of cash in the next 2-3 years would be a deal breaker in terms of cash spent on maintenance and repair of either car?

the s63 is laughable in terms of what you should expect -- a tuned m157 with 93,000 miles ... yikes ... turbo lines ... $8k, engine harness, $2k, brake job $2-4k, trans $4-7k, suspension, control arms, tie rods... $500-1000...

this doesn't include routine maintenance.

You'll need a really good mechanic to privately inspect both vehicles, scope cylinders, leak down tests, check all sensors for leaking oil etc...

Good luck

W222 S63 AMG is my fave car ever but if I had to buy one I would pick the "regular" S550. It's also very powerful and if tuned properly it could beat a stock S63 as well. I would not justify the maintenance cost for the S63 otherwise I would pick it up

2015 S500, 2016 GL63 AMG
AS mentioned above the S550 would be the better purchase from a future maintenance cost.
I have, in the UK, a 2015 S500 which is the similar spec as you were looking at. It hits 60mph in 4.7 second and plenty fast enough.
Yes the S63 sounds amazing, a friend has a coupe version, however if he ever were to need a front brake job it would be horrendous in cost..
my S500 had 39000 miles on it 3 1/2 years ago when I got it, it is very well specified and even has the rare MBC as well. It now has just over 60000 miles and a wonderful car, I have managed to keep the miles down as I have other cars and keep the Merc as "best".

In my opinion this is a no-brainer; the S550. Both will be expensive to maintain, but the S63 at that mileage will be at least double the expense. AMG-specific parts have a large mark-up — check out the brake rotors / pads.

The S63 is the better car, no doubt, but I’d be very wear of one with near 100k miles. Unless you have very deep pockets.

I always find it funny how people will chime in and talk about all the failures one would expect to encounter if you own an S class and of course they then say ya need some sort of extended warranty. I would only wonder why these people are even here or own an S class if they are afraid of all these failures and maintenance costs.

So I did not own any extended warranty and my 16 Maybach did have a few more repairs than I would expect out of a car with less than 75k miles. BUT the world did not end when I had them fixed!

2019 S63 4Matic+, 2018 E400 Cabrio, wardens car.
I would run away from both of these cars if I were 24 years old unless you are into wrenching on your own cars. Even then, these cars can bite your wallet hard. There is a guy over in the S63 forum that picked up a 2015 S63 for presumably not a ton of money as it had some miles on it. Drove it for 600 miles and the car went into limp mode. Took it to the dealer, 20K+ later he needed a new harness along with a few other things as the 2015 had an issue with ATF seepage into the harness through the plug at the trans. I would take a look at the newer E class models if your heart is set on a benz.

No more MB:(
Used AMG's can equal big bucks to maintain. Especially tuned. One hiccup can wreck you if you're not financially solid.

100% S550, I understand your thinking, I'm 25, and in 2019 I bought a minty 2008 S550 w/ 45k miles, 1 owner, all dealer service records, and it was an amazing car. My friends loved it and thought it was so classy and expensive (I only paid $15k for it haha). You do not want the headache of a high milage S63 at this age. If you really wanted to... you could do a Renntech ECU tune and get some serious ponies from that twin-turbo V8...

Something to consider as well is an extended warranty. Fidelity and Freedom Warranty are accepted at all Mercedes-Benz dealers and licensed independents in the country. You can get "CPO ELW" coverage on the S63... but the information below is going to be for the top level "bumper to bumper coverage only available on the S550 because of the milage.

2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 w/ 38k miles

Freedom Warranty Complete Manufactures Extension:

36 months / up to 100k miles
$0 deductible
-$4,370
$100 deductible
-$4,220

48 months / up to 100k miles
$0 deductible
-$4,480
$100 deductible
-$4,330

60 months / up to 100k miles
$0 deductible
-$4,645
$100 deductible
-$4,495

0% Financing is available / up to 125k miles available for only $400 more

Fidelity Platinum:

36 months / additional 36k miles:
$100 deductible
-$7,271
$250 deductible
-$6,377
$500 deductible
-$5,412

48 months / additional 48k miles:
$100 deductible
-$9,583
$250 deductible
-$8,272
$500 deductible
-$6,858

60 months / additional 60k miles:
$100 deductible
-$11,591
$250 deductible
-$9,915
$500 deductible
-$8,105

Let me know if you have any questions or would like to see different terms.
Here is a pic a couple months after I bought my S550, it was a funny comparison in size compared to my mom's "sporty" Fiat 124 Spider.

you have gotten a lot of great advice
My thoughts - I just purchased my second S63 AMG , a 2014, with 44k miles. It took a new set of PS4s tires, a turbo oil line repair and fluid change throughout (about $5200) -all workat a mercedes indie. I now have a dream car that I believe in. Great ride and aggressive when I want it.
IT TOOK ME 9 MONTHS OF PATIENCE TO FIND IT -- It had to be right color, fit my budget, local enough that I could go see it, miles below 50k , and equipped like I wanted it.
You will find the website "mbdecoder" to be a great help. Free and gives you a full build list. I found myself knowing about a car than many sellers
Good luck. Enjoy whatever you end up with

I'm on my 6th s class (all bought used with low mileage). To me, the decision is always about getting the lowest mileage car that I can. An AMG getting close to 100k miles is pretty worrisome.
