Spark Plug Part Number(s)

So soon, almost time for new plugs!

What are recommended replacement spark plugs for a 2016 S550? Rock Auto shows a BOSCH ZR6SII3320 "OE Fine Wire Double Iridium" plug. A Google search says NGK are the OEM plugs in our cars.

Don't plan to buy from Mercedes, so don't need their OEM number, unless it interchanges to a recommended aftermarket.

Thanks!

Those Bosch plugs are the right ones for the S550's, you can buy the Bosch printed ones instead of the Mercedes printed ones...same thing.
NGK for the S450, S550e, S560, S600, S65, etc

Literally put these in my car last week. They're not only correct, but come pre-gapped. Perfect choice.

Be very careful removing the coil packs, my plugs were changed a couple of months ago and one coil pack disintegrated , at that time replacement coil packs were on back order everywhere, in the UK there were over 350 on back order.
I searched worldwide to no avail and ended up getting a used Mercedes one from the USA, I also found a new one made by the original maker, Borg Warner but branded " Beru " from Europe.

The first " pattern " coil pack we tried lasted about 12 miles before throwing a fault light and putting the car in limp mode, The car was off the road for several weeks before I could find a suitable replacement part.

I had phoned and emailed so many places to eventually find a part, once it turned up I actually fitted it myself and all was well. I fitted the used Mercedes one and have kept the Beru one for the future.

I also bought the Bosch coil packs on Rockauto and did both last weekend. You're already in there - for +$300 it was worth changing everything, imo. Doesn't seem to be any issue of parts scarcity in the US right now. 👍

(full disclosure, I had intermittent failure to get spark on cylinder #3 and wasn't going to play around with keeping the original coil packs... And if you're replacing one you should replace all 8)

We have a brilliant independant that has serviced both my Mercs for a few years now, it was only on refitting everything that one of the packs broke for them , It was the 3rd one back on the left side looking at it from the front of the car.
Hopefully parts may be getting back to normal now but at the time it was such a pain, as I mentioned I struggled to find just one replacement and could never have found 8.

There was one seller on ebay selling 8 used genuine coil packs but he wanted nearly £500 for them and would not split them !

I did a lot of research and found that Borg Warner made the earlier packs for Mercedes and Basch actually are the current suppliers to Mercedes.

Hate to have downtime if one of my coils breaks ... do you guys think it would be worthwhile to order up a couple new ones - just in case - and then return them if all eight survive the plug change?

Back when I did the spark plugs on my 2015, I used a spark plug boot removal tool to get the ignition coils out without damaging them, however I found that the previous owner/dealership that had been in there before had destroyed one of the boots and just taped it back together. Was burning itself up, so had to replace it. Having some spares on hand isn't a bad idea.

Purely with hindsight I would do that, it is like taking out an insurance, the chance is if you are prepared then you will never need them haha.

Many many years ago I had an XJ40 Jaguar, I was constantly "losing" the little cap covers on the bumper covering the top of the headlamp washers, they were only a few £ each, in the end I bought a couple of spares...........never lost a cap again !!!!
