Maybe just a reflection? (new windshield)

I just had my windshield replaced. So I know I'm being really picky. I was driving around noon today and noticed a reflection (?) on my windshield, a rectangular shape in the middle of the windshield. Kind of like dots that might match up with the A/C or speaker? I didn't notice it as much in the shade but maybe could be just reflection. But I looked at the dash and don't see what could create / cause that kind of reflection.

Any chance they gave you a winsdhield for a car with head's up display and your car is not equipped with that feature?

I thought about that but the HUD is on the left and this "reflection" is in the middle. Normally I *would* say it's just a reflection, but the shape of the dash isn't a pretty even rectangle. And I'm trying to remember if I ever noticed this before. I've only had the car a few months. Very possibly just a reflection. I tried to take a pic with my phone but didn't get a good pic.

Thank you for the reply though.

This is the IR cutout for radar detectors and toll passes. There should be one to the right of your mirror as well. The original windshield does have these.

Thats there for your EZPass. Look closer and you’ll see another similar section to the right of the rear view mirror also for EZ pass.

This is at the bottom of the windshield. Like where a sticker or decal was removed and left residue. I could see it at night.

Could it be a sticker from the new windshield?

I’m going to ask my dealer about it.

Yep, thats the IR cutout for an EZPass or radar detector. There is another one up to the right of the rearview mirror. If your other windshield didnt have that then it wasn't an OEM IR windshield.

But Mommy, I don't want to see that on my windshield!!!

This was a certified vehicle only 2 years old so why would the previous windshield be different, aka not be an OEM IR? Did the dealer order the wrong glass?

I do find it a bit distracting and would prefer that it was not there. But if it's for EZPass / radar detector MAYBE I can live with it.

I do appreciate all the replies. It's just when they replaced the glass I didn't think there would be anything like this that I would have to look at all the time.

The reason the windshield it had might not have been the IR glass is that it could have been replaced with cheaper offbrand glass from Safelite etc because of a rock hit. Did it have the "Carl Benz" signature in the right corner? Does the one you have now? I suppose its possible the windshield you have now is aftermarket and that box is more obvious than it is on the OEM glass. I have to really strain to see the box on mine.

If its OEM glass this should be in the passenger side corner:

Steve, did you attach an image? I don't see it. But I will look for the signature. I suspect the dealer was being cheap. I emailed the same pic to them asking about that IR area.

That is the standard on our windshields. There is another spot like it to the passenger side of the top center. They are for Radar Receivers and Easy Passes. Enjoy!

OK y'all can tell me I'm crazy, but that area was not nearly as prominent on my original glass. However, I did inspect it and it does clearly say MERCEDES on the passenger side and has a Mercedes logo on the driver's side.

Funny that an area for IR is more visible than before. But I guess that's the point. You have to see it to know where to put your transponder. I'd rather put it higher than down at eye level.

Just call me a dummy. All my friends do.

Zitsky, There is a spot for your transponder that is higher - on the right side of the center upper windshield. The lower one can be used for a radar detector.

Mercedes joke. Who needs a radar detector when the S class is invisible to radar? Distronic bounces any radar signals back to the police. So they can’t track your speed. It’s like the deflector dish on the Enterprise.

Life Pro Tip

You can’t get a speeding ticket if you always drive 65 in the left lane.

I had my windshield replaced as well. I also noticed the replacement glass had a much more prominent box compared to my original glass. Both windshields were OEM. I wonder if the glass is sourced from a different company than it used to be.

I appreciate your reply. Are you saying that I’m not really crazy and there is something going on with the glass? 🥸

My partner is making fun of me after hearing all my Mercedes stories over the years. He drives a Beemer so he sucks anyway.

Does yours say "Mercedes" in script on the right side or "Carl Benz"? I noticed @zitsky said his new one said "Mercedes" when it should definately say "Carl Benz" on the S Class. I bet you are right, that its OEM but in the states comes from a different supplier than parts originating from Germany.

I don’t recall my windshield saying CARL BENZ but I believe you. Is there anything I can show my dealer to PROVE that?

Hmm. I guess I’ll have to find another W222 to look at. Maybe I even have a pic from before the sale.
