Android Auto and Waze issues?

Android Auto and Waze issues?
I finally am getting around to trying to use the android phone with the MB and have run into issues with Waze.
I can launch AA and the typical icons do what they are supposed to do. Google maps even works.
However
Once I launch Waze, it breaks.
The screen turns black and nothing works after that. I have to reboot to fire it up again.
I have deleted and reinstalled both AA and Waze on the phone, and the phone is on Android version 8.
Is Waze working for you guys?
A quick google search seems to show others have problems, but does not report on others having no issues.

- Open your phone's Settings app.
- Tap Apps
Default apps.
- Tap the default that you want to change.
- Tap the app that you want to use by default.
Android version 7.0+
- Open Android device Settings.
- Enter the Apps & notifications menu.
- Tap See all X apps.
- Scroll down and tap on Waze.
- Tap Open by default.
- Tap Clear defaults if any exist, then tap Open supported links and choose the relevant option:
- Open in this app
- Ask every time
- Don't open in this app
Android version 6.0+
- Open Android device Settings.
- Enter the Apps menu (sometimes called Application Manager).
- Swipe over to the All apps list.
- Scroll down and tap on Waze.
- Tap Open by default.
- Tap Clear defaults if any exist, then tap Open supported links and choose the relevant option:
- Open in this app
- Ask every time
- Don't open in this app

Thanks for the hints.
I am on android 8.
The issue is not that I can't open Android Auto, but that Waze crashes it when I open waze.
Is anyone using Waze successfully with AA ?

Now I got a cheap iphone to use just for carplay.
Carplay is much smoother.
