Maybe someone had installed a "memory module" and did a poor job removing?

There are 4 purple and green wires looped together and a red wire broken off

The red white is voltage supply.
I am not looking at the circuit but purple and green are probably CAN bus.

Just an update, the center control switch and the touch pad is in fact working …. I swapped the whole center console with a friends s550 and it did not work in my car. Which leads me to believe that’s it’s either the wiring or something deeper with in the car.

Yes someone messed with the wiring on that car.
Locate a wiring diagram for that control unit and verify each of the wires.
I imagine you already repaired red white and still not working?
Power supply can be verified with a multimeter for CAN you can inspect the wiring but if you continue to have trouble you might want to purchase a CAN sniffer.

I have repaired both cables… looking up a van sniffer now , 1st time I’ve heard of that

A bit far but that looks like an analog input, antena or video.

Just an update… appointment with Mercedes isn’t till July 21st , apparently electronic department is extremely backed up.. so I took apart and the only thing I seen wrong was spliced wires..

I’m also getting quite a few central gateway error codes but nothing to do with command or control

Just to keep everyone updates , I finally fixed it… turned out to be rats chewing up the wires on the passenger side under the dash where I circled at … found 3 baby dead rats… who ever had the car before me must of went crazy trying to find the problem like I did

I had the same issue
(buttons and knob unresponsive only hazards working)
a fix for me was spraying some electrical cleaner on the buttons while the car was off and cleaning them. I started the car and the buttons are working again.

Well that was quite a bit of work, had to gut the whole interior to find it but it's a good thing you did as most dealerships would have made you replace 1/2 car before they got to it.
Seats fit easily through door?
