JB Speed Spoiler Issues

Just received my JB Speed W222 painted spoiler today (it looks terrific!) and was speaking to a body shop guy I know about putting it on. He said that using double sided tape only can lead to issues with the spoiler coming off while driving and recommended tacking it on with some clear urethane in addition to the tape. Curious to know if any members here can offer opinions. Has anyone lost a spoiler having used only the tape to affix it to the rear trunk lid? TIA.

If you use actual 3M tape, and the prep solvent they sell for use with the tape, it's not coming off. Period. Be 100% certain that you have it in the correct place before setting it down!!!!

If you use the tape without the prep, then it's possible but still not likely.

I'm relatively certain that the dealer doesn't use 3M, thus my wife's W212 spoiler is lifting at the edges.

I've been considering ordering one for mine. One of the members used a JB spoiler on his Silver S550 and had fantastic results. @cfmistry had it on for a couple years then removed it. It looked great before, during, and after. Let us know how yours turns out.

That’s correct, I removed mine after some time (a year or two?) with zero issues. Easy to remove with a little help from a heat gun.

I got mine off of eBay, came with tape that was pretty damn strong. Placed it on over a year ago, it still is on there like the day I put it on. Been through many car washes, hand washes, pressure washes, and no sign of it getting weaker/lifting. I'm actually afraid it might be difficult to take off should I ever need to take it off. I don't think you'll need any fancy urethane stuff lol

I had a JB speed spoiler on my SL550 for 10 years without issues tape holds fine. Just make sure to prep the area before you install.

Thank you, @dmatre.

Any special tips or tricks to achieve proper alignment? I assume it cannot be moved once placed!

@Dave3359 No, mine did not. Just a roll of it in the box.

I temporarily tape it to the car with blue painters tape. Then I outlined the the corners with tape for location one last wipe with alcohol

This is how I did it also. Use 2 people, so that you check both sides simultaneously as you lower it.

If it did not come with 3m brand body molding tape, get some by brand name. It comes in varying thicknesses widths and lengths. Don’t get the really thin stuff. It should be about an 1/8th inch thick or so, maybe a tiny bit less. One this stuff is applied, after cleaning with a solvent like ipa, it will not come off until you remove it. This is the stuff used by manufactures and is approved by Mercedes from their authorized body shops.

Easy peasy, don’t pay for someone to do it.

Any failure would be in the newly painted part and prep and that will not be changed with a different adhesive holding it to the car.

It is also easy enough to check once in awhile and re-affix if you ever needed.
