Interesting thread for sure.

I also agree that lip and sass from noobs is very off-putting

I only use Chevron Premium. Yes it's all from the same tanks. But Techron is absolutely an amazing detergent. My MB Tech absolutely raves how clean my engines are. The difference here between Costco Premium (non-top tier) and Chevron is $1.06. With a full tank at 21 gallons, it costs me a whopping $22.26 more a fill. Fill 4 times a month and it costs me $89.04 more. I think it is a cheap investment.

Your car uses Piezo injectors. They don't like low quality additives. Those are not cheap to replace.

Call me superstitious, but once on a long trip in my old ML430, I could not find TopTier gas. So I loaded with the off brand (mom & pop) premium. Now I always like to see my mileage. I swear, I got a lot less per mile on that cheap gas.

I think there was a link somewhere in the thread for Top Tier brands. But here's where you can find the list of brands that meet the standards for additives: https://www.toptiergas.com/gasoline-brands/

The link that Carlos provided, identifies Costco Wholesale USA as Top Tier.

A friend had a Yugo 20+ years ago. IIRC, it was a 3 cylinder engine. Probably great on gas and wouldn't be surprised if they are collectibles now.... 😀

I have aways filled my better cars ( E55's, E63s, 530i and the 964 Turbo) with either Shell or Sunoco always, and it has served me very well so far.

The pride of the master auto craftsmen from Yugoslavia. Paul Shanklin wrote a song about it, to the tune of Elvis Presley’s “ In the ghetto”.

And here's a shocker, people with money care about the cost of fuel also.

My college roommate had a Yugo for almost 10 years. His car was incredibly reliable, he only had one repair in the first 8 years of ownership. The ignition switch broke when the car was less than 3 years old. No warranty so he had to pay to get it fixed. Luckily there were tons of junk Yugo's so we bought an ignition switch from a junk yard for $25, had it installed for something like $30. Otherwise he just had routine maintenance, but at 8 years he just parked it, then gave it away.

Being someone with money myself, I do care about the price of gas. It doesn't drive my decision making process but its something that I think about. I know where the best priced stations are etc. In any event nobody was complaining about the price of gas, he just asked what people were seeing in terms of gas prices.

I know many extremely wealthy people that are also pretty frugal.

I paid 2.79 at Costco in Webster TX. Regular was 2.29. I checked the prices at a Valero on the Galveston seawall yesterday. 3.26 and 2.36 for regular. So 15 gal at Costco is $41.85 plus the cost of 2 gals r/t makes 47.43. If I buy 15 gals at Valero that's 48.90. Driving to Costco just for gas would save me 1.50 but 50 miles wear and tear and time. We go to Costco and the nearby Sam's about 2x month. Moral of the story? I wouldn't drive to Costco just for gas. What's striking is how local stations are ripoffs for premium. Costco differential 0.50. Valero 0.90. It's the same at every local station I see.

The only people who think rich people don't care about prices are people who don't know any rich people.

To the real point about gas price and how it relates to Top Tier Gasoline; the difference was around $.06 cents per gallon for Top Tier Gasoline when the research was done in 2016. My guess is that the amount is still close to that same $.06 cents, or maybe a couple $.01 or $.02 cents more at this point.

A better equation is not about getting Top Tier or not, it's about how. You can buy top tier gas and get the PEA already in the gas, or you can buy fuel additives that contain PEA. A bottle of Red-Line Fuel treatment, which has the highest concentration of PEA, cost around $12, or $6 for the basic Techron fuel system cleaner, which has around half the PEA. When looking at those options it's cheaper to buy Top Tier gasoline than buy the additive by the bottle, and you have the additional benefit of a constant stream through your fuel system.

We don't have a local Costco that has a gas station. The one in Wheaton has one but its too far to drive for gas. I like to run Shell, and theres a station right down the street from my house. Whats funny is theres another Shell across the intersection that is always 20c cheaper...within eyeshot of each other. That one is on the inconvenient side of the intersection though so I just pay the 20c more lol
