4-Matic is a must if you need to drive fast in rain or snow, for example when going skiing etc.
If you prefer to drive on sunny days and will never drive in rain or snow, then there is no point in getting this type of car.
I have driven both RWD and 4X4 really different cars in both you are able to feel the difference in driving.

I drove 4matic and rear drive back to back on SF Bay Area freeways, really cannot feel a big difference in local dry conditions. I have a SUV with excellent 4x4 capabilities so never considered a 4 matic, my car will never see snow and I rarely drive it in the rain. If you really will be in snow I wouldn't even consider non 4matics
