I need to replace the control unit on my 2017 s550 and I am wondering if instead of using the 2017 replacement unit I could use the 2018 year part to allow for apple CarPlay which came out for the 2018 model. It might be a ridiculous question but since I had to replace it anyway, I thought I would check it out.

I can't answer your specific question but adding Carplay is relatively simple and inexpensive. I added the Roadtop unit to my 2014 and it's the best upgrade I've done to date.

Would require significant coding work from an expert indie as many of the systems changed for the facelift.
