Bishop64’s 3 pics tell the story best. Just look at the distance between the wheel and the road for the 21”. Couple that with a weaker sidewall - like Pirelli - and you have a recipe for tire failure when you hit a pothole.

2022 S580 Land Boat
Just got shuttled to the dealer to pick up my loaner while waiting for a replacement tire for the one I blew on Saturday. The service advisor tells me “hey, take a look right over there”. And there’s yet another S580 with a blown 21” Pirelli. I even snapped a pic of it. Looks like the owner drove it for a bit to get away from wherever it happened. The rim is wrecked too.

The service advisor told me that the problem is so widespread that no one is surprised anymore when these come in. His exact words were “this should be a class action lawsuit”. So please, please, please if you’ve experienced this problem, go read my thread and send me the info. I want to get the ball rolling with MB corporate ASAP. If all we do is ***** on the forums, nothing is ever going to be done about this.

Here’s another unfortunate soul at the dealer.

I'd like to give MB a chance to start taking care of this voluntarily. Besides, out of all the people that complained about this issue, only one so far sent me all of the detailed info. There needs to be serious appetite for a class action suit.

The lawyers do a good job of taking care of the hunger side. I do like the idea of giving them a chance to make things right; lesser means and all that.

Anyone with a 580 equipped with Pirelli on 21” wheels needs to act on Odesskiy’s request. So far, there are dozens of failures- that we know about - with this setup, and if you haven’t had one yet, chances are you will. These are catastrophic tire failures that could lead to injury or worse. Pirelli, and MBZ, need to act to remedy this. And WE need to make sure they do. So please, if you are affected, get the information requested by Odesskiy so he can compile it and get the ball rolling.

I have a 2017 e300 it has the stock 19” rims 245/40rf19 that came with it I want to change it to 20” rims Does this make sense of what I’m going for will it fit?
front 20x8.5 rear 20x9.5 ? What should my offsets be? Can anyone help please and opinions. Should I just go 20x8.5 all around?

Seems like MB went with odd choices for tires this generation.

Now that Mercedes has told you to”pound sand” - as you artfully described - is there any appetite to seek a class action against them and Pirelli?

I am thinking a good next step would be triggering an NHTSA investigation. If there are reports from multiple people, they will investigate as this definitely falls under their definition of a “safety-related defect”.

I have done 2 things.
I sent an email to. NHTSA.Webmaster@DOT.gov
and,
I went to the NHTSA website and filled out an incident report - easy to do- as to my Pirelli/pothole failures.

Everyone: these unsafe 21” Pirelli tires need to be OFF our cars, and MBZ needs to address the issue. And those of you, and from what I read on the Forum there are many, that have had these
failures, please take the time to report them to the NHTSA.
As for me, I’m going to pop for the over$2000 and replace my Pirellis with Michelin. 3 failures on my car are 3 too many. And to those with the 21”/Pirelli combo…..good luck!

The Michelins have few thousand miles already on them and they have firmed up nicely while giving a great ride. They handled the choppy and some uneven roads without any blowouts so far.
the sidewalls are more beefier looking then the Pirellis and look thicker overall.

I had em on on my Panamera, no issues although there was some noise with them. Much fatter and I'm guessing less sound insulation, makes sense they'd be louder there. Mine were 20" and were the stock tires; I'd probably go with the all seasons here if I change the stock rubber.

I guess I'm lucky. These tires on my Audi S8 are quiet, smooth, and I feel absolutely no vibrations in the car or steering wheel. 21" wheels/tires and I've never owned a car with wheels this large. I'm actually looking for a problem and can't find a single issue.

Even my Audi A8 and RS7 came with Pirellis and they were fine and didn't feel anywhere as soft as the one on the S. The new gen RS7 has 22 inch rims size 285/30R22 tires and no one complains or had any blow outs with those Pzeros on them including the RS6. However they never road smooth at high speed and had a bit dead feel in steering wheel compared to the Michelins I have on the RS7 now which are the same Pilot Sport 4S as on the S class.
Mercedes and Pirelli picked the wrong kind of tire for this heavy car and made the sidewalls so soft that it was a disaster from beginning.

I think Pirelli gives P Zeros an 1-year warranty (materials and workmanship).
If the tyres are defective, then try contact them to claim a free replacement.
I imagine one must include as much info as possible, including photos of the pothole, damaged tyre, model of car...etc

I also submitted a report to the NTHSA describing the issue with these awful tires. I highly encourage everyone that experienced catastrophic failures with these tires to do the same. The more voices speak up, the higher the chances that NHTSA will investigate and compel MB and Pirelli to replace them.

MB initiated the buyback process for my car, so I am waiting 6-8 weeks to see if they agree to repurchase it. If they do not and I have to keep the car, I will pay out of pocket to replace Pirellis with Michelins. These 21" Pirellis are absolute trash and I am tired of worrying about them every time I drive the car.

Hope it gets sorted out for you. What do you plan to replace it with? The a8l or new 7 series

I am thinking about the electric 7-Series if I can get past the ugly front end, but overall I like it much better than the egg-shaped EQS.

I really like the new I7 alot. it looks good without the m sport front bumper. I customized one for fun with tanzanite blue, 20 inch rims and cognac interior and it looks sharp

Angry 4 Tires in 3 months

Getting it on the flatbed took good hour too, the driver had to use wood beams under the wheels to make sure the front bumper didn’t bottom out. Took a few tries, went from attempting to drive it straight up to backing it on. About 3 hours in total. I absolutely loathe this car. I will be calling Mercedes Corporate and demanding they buy it back. If they don’t, I will find a way to lemon it and will raise stink on every social media platform and through my national TV contacts. This car is absolute trash. There is no quality to either design or engineering. Half-baked imposter instead of a true flagship vehicle.
I am in complete agreement with you on that, bought a 2022 S 580 in March of this year and so far have 1600 miles on it, 3 of tires have had bubbles on it and the 4th one blew out yesterday, had to get the car towed to the dealership.
Went through the exact same harrowing ideal you faced, an hour with MB assistance who refused to understand that this car did not come with a spare and wanted to send out a tech to replace the wheel. I tried explaining to the lady that this car needs to be towed to the dealership for over 15 minutes.
I have again and again requested for the dealership to install the Michelin 4S sport tires but their response is they are not available till the end of the year. I am so afraid to drive this vehicle anywhere out of the city and after dark, that it just sits in the garage. Would be more than happy to file a law suit on Mercedes for such a horrible design and endangering people.
