Run Flat tires

Ok, gentlemen, school me on the ridiculousness of run flat tires. What do I replace them with? I am a realtor, so I drive constantly for work. I have had my S580 4Matic for almost 8 months and have replaced 3 tires to date.

How much do you drive bro? Lol. I do real estate too and drive like crazy and I don’t go through 3 sets of tires in 8 months

Are you thinking of ditching run-flat tyres and replace them with non run-flat?
Since you are not complaining about road noise but the longevity/reliability, having non run-flat tyres might not be as advantageous.

As you surely know, the main advantage of run-flats is they allow you to drive on for, say, 50 miles without the need to change tyre.
I guess those 3 tyres were replaced due to being punctured (possibly by sharp objects on the ground when you visited a new development construction site)?
Is this not a welcome feature as your job has such a high occurrence of punctured tyres?

There are many members here who dislike run-flats and they definitely can advise you with first hand experience of choosing non run-flat.

And, certainly, a big advantage, probably the reason they are used, is their is no need to carry a spare tire.

I prefer run-flats. No worse feeling than hitting a massive pothole and bring rendered immobile.

@KingdomCometh Well, I'm a woman, and you know what they say about female drivers...in my case, it's true when it comes to tires! I live in Texas, and the amount of new construction here is insane. One tire popped due to a piece of concrete that flew out of the back of a large truck, without enough time for me to avoid it, and the other 2 were due to nails.

Keep the runflats. At least you can drive a short distance to some place safe. Non runflats with no spare is a bad situation to be in.

I have a new 2022 with maybe 200 miles on it. The car is very quiet and with EABC, rides like a dream. That said, the run flats give the car a “nervous” feeling over sharp road imperfections. I have 19” wheels and have ordered a set of my favorite Bridgestone QuietTrack, non-run flat tires. I hope to get them installed in a day or two. I’m quite sure these tires will improve ride quality.

What’s up Streamliner, I’m just wondering what sizes you’re running on those tires? Stock or a different width/sidewall ratio than stock?

I‘m staying with the stock 19” wheels and the stock tire size: 255/45R19. Unless, of course, I just dump the car and do something else.

The 21s pirelli I ditched was not runflat. They were very soft and felt cheap in my hands when I carried them into my garage after mounting the Michelin on them. I hate pirelli

From my understanding, while run flats are able to be driven on a punctured tire, the likelihood of having the tire puncture in the first place is much much higher because of the stiff sidewall. If you hit really large objects that would puncture any tire, maybe sticking with run flats is worth it. But if you were shocked that your tires punctured, then switching to a non run flat tire sounds right for you.

Get rid of the run flats and keep a puncture kit in the trunk. The run flats wear faster, make this rude low sensory rumbling noise that makes you want to check yourself into a looney bin, and they’re expensive.

That's where I am right now. The noises come off the road making me CRAZY. I'm switching to non run flats and if that doesn't do it, i'm ditching my Mercedes. My Acura TL before I thought had road noise until i got this thing.

Just going to non-run flats may not do the trick. You need to figure out WHICH conventional tires will be the smoothest and quietist, which is where I am right now. I was unhappy when I put a set of my favorite Bridgestone QuietTrack tires on, as they not all that quiet. But, Bridgestone offers a 90 day “Buy & Try,” money back guarantee, so giving them a shot is a no risk way of seeing what another tire might do.

Unless you’re used to a RR Phantom this shouldn’t be how you feel, especially coming from an Acura TL. Your car got issues, get that joint checked out

Whereas most folks complain about transmission issues, I seem to always have tire issues on MBs: not transmission problems. I'm using Michelins on my S560 and they are a good bit less noisy than the RFs it had when new. I always keep a plug kit in the trunk.

Didn't you mention Hankooks some time this week on a thread? I've always had good luck with them on every vehicle I've owned.

Never had them before, but they came on the S580 I got. Been fooling with the tire pressure for a better ride, but looking into possibly Pirelli or Continental non-run flats. But, I’m not sure the W221 spare, that I carried in my three W222’s will fit. It’s always something! First world problems.

Why not do a dry run with the spare?
That is the only way to be sure.
Good exercise for a morning too.

Edit:
And since the spare is from the W221 era, better double check the condition of the spare tyre. I think the shelf life is just about 10 years.

My problem is, Only one option for non runflat for my car. I'm sorry I didn't realize i was in the S class forum.

All I can say is WOW! That sidewall damage is severe and tire still looks inflated. I was a little upset my EQE SUV didn't have a spare or even a tire mobility kit but after looking at that picture I'm sticking with MOE run flats. Looks to me like they're worth every penny.

This is such an old thread. I had the dealer try it for me. The spare will fit on the rear, not on the front. So, should I have a flat on a front tire, I would have a rear put on the front t and the spare put in back. A pain, but WAY better than getting stranded.
