2022 - S580 and 2019 Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet
Favorite S Class features no longer avail.

There were certain features in my old S Classes that I loved and miss. Two in particular were:

- early 90’s - my Rear view mirror had fully electric adjustments. There was a little stubby joystick on the center panel (where the pad was) which allowed you to adjust the mirror up/down/side to side with minute precision. It then stored the settings for each driver along with the side view mirrors, seats and steering wheel.

- I think my 2013 or 2016 S - had rear headrests that could be raised or lowered electronically from the driver seat. Down for good visability; up when rear seat passengers were present.

I’m not sure why these great features were dropped.

What other favorites does everyone miss?

Yes, buttons, switches, knobs, etc. Today, I took my S580 on a 150 mile round trip. I had to look at the steering wheel controls for the Distronic whenever I needed to adjust it. With the toggle on the W222’s, I could easily do it all by touch, never taking my eyes off the road.

One thing I miss and wish they still kept the double hinge from the W222 for the storage compartment...

Speaking of storage, I can't believe how there is minimal space in the center armrest storage and also the glove compartment.

Sorry but my English is poor, do you mean the hooks for shopping bags at the trunk? My 2006 W221 had two of those. My 2014 W222 had none. My W223 has one.

The glove compartment is small and has been so for some time. The centre armrest storage area can be small or reasonably large depending on options. The rear climate control takes a lot of space from the armrest storage. The 223 has some a bit hidden behind the centre screen (in addition to the normal "cup holder" space).

True. The "bit hidden behind the centre screen" is useful but not a covered storage. My main gripe is the glove compartment, than can be locked, is frustratingly small.
I'm looking for a nice/functional small box I can put in trunk. Many out there (cheap) but not high-end.

I think @Diesel Benz means that the center armrest storage, in previous models, could be opened from either the right side or left side. "Double hinge" ,,, a hinge on both sides of center armrest storage cover.

Thanks, I think I got it now. I actually cannot remember how it works on my 223.

It’s split down the middle.

I loved the power rear view mirror in my dads W140.

Though mine was not split. Had to go and check from the car and realised it actually is split too. It used to be split on cars that had a cell phone kit but my 223 does not have that.

Had a look at Parts Info and I did not find any other option for the 223.

The power rear view mirror has been gone for a long time, I believe later model year W140's didn't have it either as MB was cost cutting due to low profits and a recession (and DaimlerChrysler was starting).

The rear headrests can still be lowered in the W223, it is an option in the quick access car menu.

On my way home today I was having to adjust my rearview mirror (in my wife's Ford Explorer) from where my wife has it set and I was just thinking today about the power rearview mirror on my W140. The reason I liked it, is because when you reach forward to adjust it with your hands, your position is slightly off from where you would be while driving. I have to adjust it a couple of times to get it just right. Another reason they may have eliminated it was because some folks might have broken or stripped the gears in the mechanism of the mirror as they adjusted by hand instead of using the toggle button. I do miss it though.

no worries, I don't think it is you, it is me, I am bad at explaining things actually so you didn't understand, entirely my fault but yes forum member Sonic Boom guessed it correctly despite my poor wording. Curious, who else miss that? I think that was such an S-Class feature!

I have the 4-Zone Climate in my S580 and the center armrest storage is a joke. I cannot imagine that the juggernaut known as Mercedes-Benz Engineering could not have figured out a better solution, IF management had insisted on it. Instead, they took the easy, less expensive way out and simply destroyed the storage area, which I find to be utterly disappointing, and truly unacceptable in a flagship sedan like the W223. You can’t put much more than a pair of sunglasses and a few business cards in there! Idiots!

You should see the center console of the Audi A8, its practically non-existent.

Yeah, on the Panny it's smaller. You can get your coffee stand frequent flyer cards in there, a wipe for the piano black, small flashlight, etc.

Not sure where one could find all the room for the rear climate control stuff if not at the centre console. It is not just the control panel. Anyway, the rear HVAC is intended for those who spend their time at the rear seat. They would not care about the storage space for their chauffeur. My car would not have if if it was not coupled with some other options that I wanted.

This feature was in the beloved W140 S-Class, but dropped in the updated W140. While amazing and forward thinking for its time, it was often damaged by attendants and new users who grabbed the entire assembly to make adjustments assuming it functioned like 99% of the cars on the road. However it's just a matter of time until conventional sideview and rearview mirrors are replaced with cameras and screens.

I completely agree. Although the same issue existed in last 4 generations of the S-Class if memory serves. 4 zone climate control = tiny center console...
