Engine Oil W223

Hi - seems as there has been no thread on what engine oil is best for the W223; specifically for the 3 L 6 cylinder. I am going to be changing my own oil as usual - but for some reason I am getting conflicting answers from Mercedes Benz Dealers regarding the particular viscosity grade that is needed for the S500. Some dealers said 5w-30 mobil 1 and some stated 5w-40 mobil 1. Then another dealer said 0w-20 ESP. Does anyone have the correct answer as to what oil should be used. Drive mainly in the Northeast.

Thanks.

It also depends on your state actually, because some places have winters and some don't and others have extreme hot summers.

I do believe the spec is in your user manual though, see if it is there. You will find the spec (MB approval...) then you use that and go to https://operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com/

Viscosity is not at all the only thing to look after. This engine needs "diesel engine like" low ash oil because of the particle filter. As above, the manual states the correct oil specs.

manula has great info on oil and a chart to show what viscosities work in what ambient temp range.

Yes, a very specific oil should be used so as to not void the warranty or damage the exhaust particulate filter. Keep your receipts and document mileage with dates you changed your oil in case an engine warranty consideration case is opened with MB!

This is another approved oil in the US that can be purchased at NAPA. Note the Valvoline European Vehicle XL-III rating for engines with exhaust particulate filters:
