I never realized W223 has 3D as the base, does that mean 3D is standard too or just a cheaper version of the 4D or High-End?
The 3D in the 223 doesn't include the subwoofer or any of the additional speakers you have, so the 4D in the 223 is comparable to the 3D in the 222.

It also includes “VIP setting “ to choose which of the four seats to focus sound?

True. The subwoofer takes a bit of trunk space but negligible. Not like the cooler!

Also, there is big difference in number of speakers and watts.

Burmester 4D has 31 speakers, 1750W, 1 subwoofer & speaker on front headrests and exciters is seats.
(I know, I know,,,some are now going to ignore the speakers/watts and dwell on the negligible exciters)

Burmester 3D has 15 speakers, 710W

HUGE difference! More than double!

(note: some regions have a standard sound sys 9 speakers & 125W)

Honestly, number of speakers and wattage are over emphasized when it comes to how enjoyable an audio system is. The two best audio systems I have ever had in a car were the Nakamichi in my 98 LS400 (280 watts) and the Mark Levinson in mu 17 LS460 L (480 watts). 15 speakers and 710 watts is more than enough for an excellent car audio system if its done right.

True for the W223; however, for the W222, the Burmester 3D (Burmester High-end 3D Surround) has 26 speakers and ~1200W Amplifier (with the subwoofer and VIP seats setting)

Out of all of the cars I’ve owned, and all of the stereo systems they had, from Bose, Harmon Kardon, Bang and Olufsen (not the super high-end one, though), this one sounds the best to me. I can only imagine what the 4D system is like. If given the opportunity, I would’ve have definitely optioned that. Maybe next time. This is definitely one of the bright spots to me, very pleased.
I agree 100%. In fact, before my 2022 S580, I had a 2018 E63 with the 3D Burmester with the sub in the trunk and the extra speakers throughout. Although I miss the extra thump of the missing sub in my S580, once I setup the Burmester sound profile, the sound of 3D system is ALMOST as good as what I had in my E63. I too will say it's one of the best "stock" sound systems of all the cars I've owned.

Agree. It’s awesome. I look forward to driving simply so I can listen to the Burmester. I’ll blast it while driving.

Base Burmester on the W222 and Burmester 3D on the W223 has paper cone drivers with silk done tweeters whereas the Burmester High End 3D on the W222 and Burmester High End 4D W223 have fibre woven cones with rigid aluminum diaphragm tweeters.

I also have the B&W diamond on my 7 and it's only okay. Sure, there's some warmth and the highs are crisp, but it's not crisp enough and the roll off in certain spectrums. Pop and some jazz sound okay but I find instrumental, orchestral, and classical to be leave a lot of to be desired, especially in the mid bass spectrum where there's a timpani, bass drum, or a double bass, it doesn't sound nor feel immersive. Metallic instruments also lack the harsh sparkle like in a live setting.

I don't like the HK on my MB's. The W221 I had was leftover inventory at the time and it was either B&O with burl walnut and standard wheels or HK with piano lacquer and the perf pkg wheels. The old HK systems pre 2010 were much more satisfying.

All of these concerns are also present for me with the Burmester High End systems on my mother's vehicles.

I have yet to come across any car system that is impressive or makes me go "wow"; Naim in a Bentley is better but still not a "wow" sort of experience. Nothing sounds "live" nor realistic nor comparable to a high end home system designed by an audio professional and it feels like all the manufacturers over promise and underdeliver. Am I just being unreasonable in terms of my expectations because it's just a car system after all?

Yes, that's it. I know the answer, but this question is great one to ask the ChatGPT that's currently being tested by MB in Beta. Please give it try as we need more traffic.
