Question Auto Unlock Feature

I've just gotten my new 2023 S580 last week. I'm having trouble finding a solution to my question in the owners manual.

Sometimes when I approach my vehicle with my key fob in my pocket the handles pop out and the lights come on. At other times, nothing happens and I have to take the key fob out of my pocket and press unlock.

I know there must be a simple explanation.

I'm absolutely loving the vehicle! It's my retirement present to myself . . .

Chances are your handles are timing out due to the fob being in close enough proximity to communicate with the car. The handles retract by design if they extend but the door is not opened or if the fob has been in detectable range for a set time period without having been close enough to extend the handles. Once that happens they will not automatically open again until after you've first opened them manually. To get around it lock your car when you get out and place the fob far enough from the car that it has no communication with the car. If that isn't practicable, get a Faraday pouch to block the signal. You'll want to do this in any event or a post you'll be making soon is about your battery being low or dead.

Congrats btw, nice gift you've given yourself!

If when leaving your vehicle you click the lock button on the keyfob twice, that will disable beaconing between the car and fob to conserve battery life of the key. Upon returning to your car, you must then click unlock to gain access. I use this feature when I know I'll be away from the car for an extended period of time. I also use this feature if I'm working outside and will be walking past my car often - such as working in the driveway, cleaning out the garage, yard work, etc. This prevents the door handles from deploying each time I walk past the car.

I echo @crabman 's comments - happy retirement and nice gift to yourself.

Depending on how you go about it the bag is less trouble: If you're the type that puts your fob in some location when you come in and pick it up when you go out the bag becomes a no-brainer because you need do nothing and it achieves the same goal is fiddling around with the fob while also allowing your doors to function as designed every time you walk up to the car.

Good call on the double-click as that may be better option for those that leave their fob in a bag, pocket, etc. I never think about mentioning it though because I don't do it myself.
