Exclamation W223 Active Braking Triggers

The W223 Collision Avoidance/ Active Braking will sometimes trigger when backing up due to dense exhaust vapor water clouds fooling the sensors that there is something behind you. This is completely understandable.

Phantom Emergency Active Braking when traveling down the roadway is unacceptable. Maybe it is detecting real ghosts?

I happen to be glancing out the driver side window the other day at 40+ MPH and BAMM...neck snapping active braking occurred for no apparent reason. Clear day, clean sensors and driving through open farm land. I was lucky no one was directly behind me. This unscheduled test of the autonomous emergency braking system gave me whiplash. The system must be monitoring your head position and if your not looking straight ahead, will initiate the active braking sooner if it thinks it senses something in front and/or is coming from the side. Kinda scary now thinking about it happening again, When?

I'll let the dealer know. Just a Heads Up, I mean Heads Snap Forward.

for now, switch from 'early warning' to 'late warning' in the setting menu

I've had this happen twice now. Thankfully, I was only moving at about five miles per hour and not 40! - But both times I was pulling away from a stop light when the car slammed on full brakes. Thankfully there wasn't anyone behind me; they would have plowed into the back of me for sure. And like you, the jolt and sound scared the living sh*t out of me, because I thought I had either hit the person in front of me, or someone plowed into the back. Unnerving to say the least.

My 2022 S580 did this twice. Had there been a big truck on my tail, I might not be writing this.

This just happened to me as well on Saturday. I'd say I was going at least 40. It only happened for a split second though, but yes it's very unnerving. It also cinches the seat belts too.

I didn't think about this the other night but I should have checked the dashcam footage to see if there's anything on there or if it at least recorded the active braking action so I can save it to show the service advisor next time. I'll check it next time to see if it hopefully is still on there before it gets overwritten.
