Question HOW TO REMOVE A SCUFF

Hi there, My Mercedes was bumped by a black bumper and left a black skid mark on my ruby black paint. It is barely visible and I don't think it is scratched. How can I best clean this up at home? It is just black scuff.

Go to your local big box store like Walmart or a car parts store like Pep Boys and ask for a one of the following depending on how deep the scratch/scuff is:
  • Light scratches (clear coat only):Use a finishing polish like Meguiar's Ultimate Polish or 3M Scratch Removal System . These are gentle and effective for minor imperfections.
  • Medium scratches (touching base coat): Opt for a mild cutting compound like Meguiar's ScratchX 2.0 or Griot's Garage Complete Compound . These can tackle scratches that catch your fingernail slightly.
  • Deep scratches (penetrating base coat): Heavy-duty cutting compounds like Chemical Guys VSS Scratch and Swirl Remover or 3D One Hybrid Cutting Compound & Finishing Polish are ideal. They are abrasive and may require repainting after use if the scratches are too deep.

Since you have a scuff and not a scratch, I would suggest that you try "Goo Gone" which you can also find at your local big box store. "Goo Gone" will remove residues that have gotten on the paint such as glue from bumper stickers, etc and it's much less likely to damage your car's paint.

Do both what Mem303065 says first then follow up with what 190fan says. No biggie! I just had my hood repainted due to numerous rock chips. $1000. So your problem is nothing to sweat about. Wrapping the problem is not in my pocket idea as it costs almost the same. I'd rather get my hood and spoilers repainted instead of wrappying.
