If you're deciding between a 2020 S560 and a 2021 S580 I would do the 2020 S560 for sure. The S560 is a great car, one of the greatest...you're buying used either way so there is no new vs used debate...the benefits of the 223 are not worth the headaches of an early one which are well documented to be problematic.
Get a 560 now and in 3-4 years get a 24 or 25 580.

I simply asked for guidance but I guess ridicule and attempting humor is easier.
I really like the W223 interior, but something about the W222 exterior is a bit more appealing (IMHO). My budget could stretch to cover a 2021 but I’m assuming all I could expect is a basically equipped S580. How is the first year of a new model? Anything avoid for options? Before someone makes the suggestion, I looked at a 36 month lease. Unless there is merit in the tax return or something else, it looks insane what is paid out, money put down and costs.

Your observation about 2018-2020 W222's for sale that have very few options, you're right. i found the same thing when I was looking. Like @SW205 said, options are VERY expensive when bought new, so the people who buy highly optioned cars tend to hold on the them longer. And the dealer allocated cars almost never come highly optioned, only in a few rare cases. So the only cars that are highly optioned are the ones people ordered that way. Point being, it's EXTREMELY difficult to find a highly optioned used S-Class, especially later years W222 models.
Used car prices are based on KBB values, and what the dealer has paid for the car. Sometimes they pay more for a car, so they need to get more from the next buyer. If you run into one of those, you just have to decide if you like the car that much or not. That's what this is about, it's not about the cvalue of the car, it's about do you want it or not. You overpaid in the past, but let that go. You're older and smarter now, And you get to spend YOUR money any way you see fit.
But going back to your original post; your budget is going to determine what you get. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to me like you're in the price range of a W222.

Thanks Sactownmb. That might explain why a 2022 takes a leap in price and I can find many 2021(s) priced like a similarly equipped 2020.
I wish I could see at a glance just how advanced one late W222 is over the other without searching the VIN to gage the price disparity over another (Does this make sense to anyone?)
I’m looking at dozens upon dozens of ads (as an example) using a 2020 with 35,000 miles and no Carfax accidents and I’m seeing price differences as much as $25K. Most ads just show a small amount of options, many include a very long list of every item a Mercedes comes with and I’m still left with wondering what makes this car better than the other.
Maybe I need to get an order sheet for each particular model year and fabricate some sort of table so I can compare. I noticed the dealer salesmen don’t want to tell me anything - they want me to come in and talk. Not happening.
Why is it that most W222 for sale presently - (as I find their ads), are not that well optioned.

Dima's post made me think of the Spectre. I'm on record as not liking Rolls, even if money weren't a thing, too ostentatious for me. Anyhow... I've been thinking it might be time to sample an EV and it didn't take me long to end up watching a Spectre review. And then another, and then, well, you know how it goes. As much as it pains me to admit it, and you know it does... I think that thing is cool.
About the only thing not striking the right note are the taillights; they don't quite seem to fit in as well as they should. Nothing terrible, just a bit of awkwardness there. Which I suppose is why it came to mind in this context; it's not the taillights that are keeping me from buying one.
