2019 E 450 Coupe 4Matic
Considering 2023 S580

Hi. I am Currently, driving 2019 E 450 4Matic. It has 40k miles on it. I have an extended warranty 7/65k. I love the car and looks. I hate seats (have very bad back) and the fact that it doesn't have heated steering wheel.

I've been browsing for a bit looking for a better option (seat wise) and stumbled on 23 S580 w 8k miles. Manufacture, warmth, amg and 3d packages and airmatic air suspension . Basically offer is my car with 80k to cover everything (tax, fees, everything included)

should i pull the trigger? Or should I get the new 5 series for a lot less and don't waist my time with s580?
I know they are completely different cars but i am at the point where i need some back relief. I live in the city so parking is a bit cheaper here and the 5 might be better size. Then again I love the MB technology and the looks. any thoughts on reliability of 2023 and resale value later on?

Inputs are greatly appreciated from current or former owners.

The S class is an awesome car and the seats are very comfortable. I think the price might be on the higher side. I would also check the sticker to see if any features are missing.

Check out Volvo in your search for the most comfortable seat.

My father also had severe back pain. He bought an S90 because of the seats. It’s not a Benz, but I do think that those seats were superior even to MB/BMW, regardless of the model.

The price seems high. Take it/one for a long test drive, or if you can overnight to see if the seats work for you.

perhaps a loaded up new E with the 6 cylinder. The multi contour seats in the front with massage should help

2022 S580
When it comes to seat comfort my S580 is the most comfortable car Ive owned. The seat adjustability, softness, massage settings, quietness of the cabin are excellent.

My 2022 S580 (2.5 years as owner now) has had some issues (specifically) with the battery but they seem (fingers crossed) to be resolved now. There are plenty of quirks with the car (as you will see on this forum) which hopefully the refresh will address. I haven't had the easiest ownership experience (but I am very picky) however, others on this forum have had much worse experiences. And honestly, in some cases, other individuals have had amazing ownership experiences.

If I were to buy a used S580, I would avoid the first year (2021) and would be very thorough in my due diligence. Check the service history in detail (what have been the problems, how were they resolved?, were they actually resolved or did somebody just get fed up and dump the car), find out why it was traded in or sold to the dealership, if possible talk to the previous owner(s). If all this checks out then paying up a little bit is worth it for peace of mind and definitely negotiate an extended warranty into the deal (obviously depending on how long you're planning to own the car). It also appears that the newer the model year the less likely you are to have issues.

Good Luck!!

2023 S580
I bought my '23 Nautical Blue S580 and have loved it since I bought it. A few quirks, but found that in every car I have owned. Absolutely love the $D Burmeister and the seats are magnificent. My wife hates them but it is body shape and size - she is 5'4" and tiny so she doesn't get the support she needs with how the seat pan is shaped. She much prefers her F250 Superduty, believe it or not! To each their own...lol.

Yeah- my wife is not on board. Her biggest gripe is the matte paint - she fears it will get scratched easily. Plus, we can go through a car wash
My negatives are the price (I think they can do better) and the lack of rear steering

The matte paint IMO is a legitimate concern. Rear wheel steering is cool, but mine doesn't have it and it doesn't bother me.

This is an awesome build!! Hard to find 2020-2022s with all these options. It's a 2023, and still has decent warranty years/miles, if they can CPO it, that's an awesome W223!
Can't compare the 5-series to an S-class... Very different cars. If you want to save money (as you hinted in your original post), I'd consider a 2020-2022 7-series instead, but not a 5-series. However, if you had an E-class before, you'd probably like the 5-series too. I'd make sure to drive it long enough. The car has a small cabin relatively speaking, but very fun to drive. We had a 530e PHEV that we really liked it; but owning a W222 at that time proved that the 5-series is not even close to the s-class driving experience.

It actually is CPO. But it's new month and I think I missed the windows on the price tbh. My wife voted against it so have to wait for her to come around. My mind tells me it is a very good find but I hear her concerns as well and they are indeed valid

What concerns did she have? That car is really well equipped and hard to find btw... Mbenz CPO gives you one additional year of bumper-to-bumper and unlimited miles (that's as good as it could get; only Lincoln has better CPO terms than Mbenz (my CPO Lincoln Navigator had six-year/100,000-mile warranty coverage!!!), plus you can extend the CPO Mbenz unlimited miles warranty by a year or 2 for a very small amount of money relative to what 3rd party insurance companies charge for pre-owned cars). BMW CPO was fine but the additional years always has some exclusions in fine print, and doesn't cover common failure points like cabin items and headlights, trim panels, seats, rattles, etc. I just bought a GLS that was built late 2022, so it had only 1.5 years warranty time used, and it's CPO'ed, am almost back to original warranty in terms of years yet with unlimited miles, which I can also extend by another 2 years for a small amount of money. CPO is the way to go warranty wise when buying pre-owned. I never paid for 3rd party extended warranties and am generally against it, but have no problem paying a little more for a CPO'ed car (1-2K above fair market value), at least I know it was up to Mbenz standards and was thoroughly checked.

Those are all valid. I wonder how much was your warranty extension price wise (the additional 2 years on top of CPO).
Her concerns are: paint (matte - and we heard from our friend who had it it was a b…. To maintain and it’s easily scratched). Price she thinks it’s too much (although I don’t think this right from a deal perspective). Size - she is petite and for her it’s way too big of a vehicle. She already told me she wouldn’t even attempt to drive it.

I don't know if it has to be based on previous agreements or original car purchase language, but in my case, it clearly says that I can extend it by 1-year or 2-years at any point of time now, or just at the day the full warranty expires in the future. Prices may change, but if I pull the trigger now, price is reasonable, but from experience I learned to never pull the trigger on any optional packages or offerings until the day I truly need it or at least feel like I need it.

jjackson@mblouisville.com gave me the best quote to extend my AMG CPO. One extra year was $3300 and $5k for two.

You can’t take matte paint through a car wash.

I had a 19 E450 wagon in matte gray, absolutely beautiful, but all hand washing, one reason I got rid of it. Plus back seats were cramped and not heated.

I am with you on this. My wife has the same concern as you, and that is the reason I "volunteered" to hand wash it
