First Time Buyer

I am considering buying a 2021 Pre-Owned Mercedes S580 from a dealer. I have always bought BMWs and this would be my first MB. I have some questions and I will be grateful for any advice you may be able to provide that will help with my decision/purchase.

1. It has 15k miles and the manufacturer warranty expires in 6 months. This car was listed as a CPO. However, there is a open recall on all S Class (2021 - 2023). Therefore, the dealer cannot offer the CPO warranty. What would be the value of the warranty that I can ask towards the reduction in price
2. Is an third party extended warranty as good as a MB warranty and which company would you recommend
3. This car comes with the 21 inch wheels. I read about the issues with tire blowouts. Is this a major concern that would prevent me from considering this car. I looked at he Carfax records and the car had a tire replaced every 4k miles. This car was driven in LA but I will be driving it in Dallas.

Thanks

If you read through this forum I think that you will come to the conclusion that the last thing that you want to do is own a 2021 out of warranty.

No it is not. In my opinion the only extended warranty to have is through MB. There is no deductible with the MB extended warranty. I recommend Jeff Jackson of Mercedes Benz of Louisville. Give him a call and find out the price. I would then use that as a bargaining tool if you want to go ahead with the purchase.

Again my opinion only: An S Class, even an AMG is never going to be a "sports sedan": in fact just the opposite. It is a luxury car and in Europe usually driven by a chaffeur. So I for one cannot understand having anything but the stock wheels. The ride with the 21" wheels will be harsher and expect more bubbles in the sidewall, blowouts and/or wheel damage. Having anything other than the smaller stock wheels is a classic case of form over substance.

Just my $.02 and hope it helps

I contacted Jeff but he said that he cannot sell me an MB Extended warranty with an open recall on the cars. This affects all S Class (2021 - 2023), over 20,000 vehicles and they have no idea when the will get the parts. I would prefer not to have the 21 inch wheels. But most of the cars I have looked at in my price and milage range have it. I may be able to find one with 20 inch wheels but the warranty still is an issue. Thank you

I would not walk away from this car, I would RUN!

I have a 2022 and there are no open recalls on it. There were but they were resolved when MB had the solutions a couple months ago. 2021 does not support Android Auto wirelessly if that matters to you and there are a few more items that changed after that first year of the W223

There has been an update since the last time I posted this message. The dealer called and said that they have the parts to fix thr recall and they can sell it as a CPO.

Is this 2021 S580 worth considering or should I just look for somethimg else? Thanks

Android auto does not matter to me. But did they address any of the reliability issues with the first gen W223 in the 2022 model?

Just keep in mind that these cars are incredibly complicated and horrendously expensive to repair. Of all the W223's, the first year 2021's seem to be the most problematic. The only way you should consider one, is if it is FULLY covered by a factory backed warranty for an extended amount of time. Frankly, I would rather have a brand new "something else," than a used W223, but that's just me. Best of luck to you.

I would first check with Jeff Jackson on the cost of an extended warranty.

Mine had a few "quirks" that were resolved under warranty such as the replacement of the stereo cameras and camera hood due to fogging. The other quirks were resolved by software updates. I have not experienced any mechanical issues with mine.

Many if not most 2022 are missing the kick to open trunk and fragrance packages / options due to the chip shortage. You can pull up the build sheet on prospective cars by their VIN and see what was and was not inluded in the specific build to that car.

Be aware of which options you desire. There are many. They do not just come "loaded" with every option. Luxury line is the lowest line I believe followed by the AMG line and then the Executive line. Even the Executive line does not come "loaded" and there are many more options to select.

Any chance the missing options can be retrofitted?

What don't you like about the new E 450? If you don't like the new E 450, you could probably get a used W222 or used W213 but if you can overcome what you don't like about the W214, it is a great vehicle overall. Make sure to test drive, it is not a good idea to have buyer's remorse.
