I find myself watching very old runs of Top Gear which I haven't seen in, what, 20 years? I skip through to the cars I want to see - BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Range Rovers, etc. Anyway, my takeaway of 20 years of automotive development is, man, how far has Mercedes Benz fallen. El fat Presidente's aside (Clarkson used this joke on the W140), the new design language of the million stars with mercedes just...makes me so friggin sad. How the mighty truly has fallen, and over the last 20 years and the entire series of Top Gear, many S classes were reviewed. I was so sad watching each one and seeing where we are now. Don't get me wrong. The W223 is top of my list as my next daily German sedan, but the compromises for me to get one (e.g. bypassing the exterior looks) - like...seriously Mercedes?!

And before I rightfully get wrecked for saying this on MBW, the same is said for Audi and BMW.

It seems only Rolls Royce & Range Rover kept to their core

Good times. Also, the old school S is...properly thick glass wise.

For reference, the W220 cost even more: $1,030,000,000 in 1998 Dollars (largely spent during 29 months from design freeze shortly after the complete design finalization at the end of 1995 to final prototype in August 1998). Today that would be around $2,100,00,000, so a bit more than double that, and of course, the W140 itself went significantly over budget due to the 18-month delay from September 1989 to April 1991 and the development of the V12. I could never find sources for the W221’s cost, but the W222 budget exceeded two billion Euros by many accounts. For all their triumphs and missteps on the S-Klasse across decades, Mercedes-Benz has never cheaped out on its development.

I can remember when it was reported that Ford spent around $1.3 billion developing the Thunderbird SC in the late 1980’s.

I just finished Clarkson's review of the W221 - a car I didn't like much exterior wise but I forgot how beautiful that interior was. Those beautiful hard buttons. The integrated screens. Seat massagers & night vision were clearly ahead of its time, but still - those buttons. It made me remember actually USING those buttons in my previous lifetime and how exquisite they were. It actually reminds me of Rolls Royce (in some ways) today.

Car automakers - the lot of them - BMW, Audi, Mercedes....all went to the shi*ter on this front. Sad.

The only advantage the 7 has, and it’s minor, is the push button to open and/or close any or all of the 4 doors. Since the 7 is now part of the Rolls Royce family, they use that feature.

Well, the current 7 Series has another huge advantage and that is that the EV version is the exact same car—only better, in my humble opinion.

The W222 had plenty of great buttons, knobs & switches as well. Here’s my first one in 2015. Palladium Silver, a magnificent color, which of course was discontinued.

As much as I am a “born again” EV fan, if I could order a brand new W222 right now, with my beloved Magic Body Control and KNOW that it wouldn’t be a lemon, I really do believe I would do it. I love my BMW I7, but when I look at these photos and recall the way those cars drove, it was just spectacular. My three new W222’s, all with MBC & 18” wheels were “THE” best riding, most comfortable cars I have ever experienced.
