‘22 Mercedes S580 Rattles, squeaks, and creaks
Hey guys,
I recently bought a 2022 S580 with about 12,000mi, and so far I love the car, the spec is what I wanted, however I can’t help but be driven crazy by some of the cabin noise present in the car.
I’d like some advice if anyone’s dealt with these before, so I could know the possible causes and find a solution.
The most notable ones, in order from “driving me the most crazy” to least
1. Driver side dashboard creaks

1. Driver side dashboard creaks
If the road is less than perfect, or if I’m accelerating/decelerating, at any speed (highway or parking lot speeds), there is a constant repetitive creaking coming from the driver’s side dash. It’s subtle, sounds plasticky, and gosh it pisses me off. Any brake/gas application will trigger it
2. Read right rattle over bumpsOver certain bumps, a rattle coming from the rear right can be heard, a heavy-sounding rattle. Not sure if it’s mechanical or in the cabin. I do have power rear seats if that’s a factor
3. Overhead panel buzzing/ringing noiseThis one is a bit curious to me. It’s a constant buzzing/ringing noise in the overhead console panel, but when I move my hand near it, it stops. Over certain bumps the buzz increases in frequency very briefly. I assume it somehow is linked to the gesture/proximity sensors because it stops when my hand is near it. I had a thought of simply putting tape to put an end to this, but I would love any more elegant solutions
4. Loose metallic sound in the rear driver side (door?) area when I take a turnbasically just sounds like loose nuts rolling around inside something when I take a turn. No clue what it is. I assume it’s in the door card.

When I read the OP's post a part of me just refused to believe it (new poster, 1st post), but when you stepped in, I died a little inside. How is it a modern S class is still squeaking and rattling to the extent that these are forum threads?! I'm super disappointed. Yes, I get Audi's are better built together interior wise but I expected better from Mercedes. If they can make a longer and wider Beetle from rattling then surely an S class isn't squeaking like some Buick?!

These are unfortunately common, but they can be solved.
Can you describe this a little better, is it just one little "click" type sound or is it a buzzing type sound? Right in front of you? Coming from the gauge cluster?
The dash/console design has a lot of plastic components that all fit together and it just asks for rattles and plastic on plastic sounds. Depending on where its coming from it could be the instrument panel or it could be the ambient lighting strip clicking along the wood inlay panel. Instrument cluster is an easier fix.
The power rear seat mechanism does make a sound over certain bumps, but these are rare big bumps. I would apply felt tape to the are of all the grab handles where they touch the plastic underneath, and also to the back of the flaps that cover the rear sunshades. Does raising the sunshades solve the issue?
Super common. I would take the overhead console down and add felt tape.
This is a new one, I have not had this issue. Could be something has come loose in the door...

I have observed similar, but less, issues in my GLS in couple areas. Acceptable for me in a family, kids and road trips challenger, but surely wouldn't accept it in a flagship luxury sedan. In my view, interior build quality is not something they can fix without a redesign (like they "hopefully" did with the facelift). If you track most of these issues, and how they are fixed, you basically lubricate, lubricate, lubricate and then also add felt to avoid a lot of the plastic to plastic parts rubbing each other. I install dashcams in all my cars, and can definitely tell that the surfaces behind panels, around the seat in particular, and around the A/B/C pillar aren't well put together as my W222 when looking at my GLS, and from the time I spent in the S and threads around it's obviously the same issue. A lot of plastic to plastic parts with padding or felt. The dealership fix? they replace the part the squeaks sometimes, like the headrest issues (multiple owners here reported that fix, which is likely temporarily). The new redesigned E-class (which now has similar cabin as the FL 223) seems to experience less rattles and creaks but I didn't spend enough time in this car to confirm, so if the new FL adopted similar cabin in terms of fitment, the FL will probably be better. The pre-FL? definitely not.
I did have some creaking on my V90 in the seat/console area which I didn't want to lubricate. That was fixed with a sprinkle of talc.

Also- unsure if this is related, but bigger bumps feel rougher coming from that corner that makes the rattles, the whole car "shudders" on certain bumps, like a sharp vibration.
Would felt tape really solve it? What's causing the buzzing? Sounds electronic in nature to me, seems to be related to the proximity sensors in the panel. If that's the simple solution then I'm glad to hear it

I drove a 2024 E450 AT for a year and it was rattle/buzz free. Oddly enough, most if not all of the rattles that bothered me in my 2025 580 have disappeared on all but the worst patched roads. Maybe I'm just going deaf....
I did have some creaking on my V90 in the seat/console area which I didn't want to lubricate. That was fixed with a sprinkle of talc.

FWIW there is a very annoying seatbelt rattle on the W214 E class and sunroof also rattles. Is it (rattles in general) improved over older MBs, yes. The seatbelt rattle is very common it is listed as a repair suggestion online check in according to a forum member here.
I have a 2025 E450 and while it was a remarkably quiet cabin at first, with 16k miles and after several road trips on most roads the driver’s door rattles horribly. I tend to play my music rather loud inside the car and I can often hear the door rattles over it. Drives me crazy and unacceptable in a still relatively new luxury vehicle costing over $90k.

When specifically talking about the W214, I do have experience but understandably we are talking about a W223 since this is a W223 thread in a W223 sub-forum.

Yes you were right, I do not own a W223 but my family member does. Admittedly I don't own that car so your statement holds true.
That said my family member's pre-facelift W223 is rock solid just as an S-Class should be.

Have not tried the sunshade, maybe could be the issue, I'll see if that solves the issue on my next drive. I'll probably sit in the backseat flicking things like a schizophrenic to see what makes the sound I recognize. Did not know the grab handles could potentially also cause this
