Smile S55 vs S65

I am new to this forum and don't know where to direct my questions so sorry if I am not in order.

I noticed the new S65 has a bit of a "gurgle" to it, very similar to a Formula 1 AMG safety car. Don't get me wrong the S55 sounds nice but the S65 sounds very intimidating. I am thinking the "gurgling" is created by the difference in headers. Any thoughts?

Furthermore, has anyone made the modification(s) necessary to emulate a 65?

Thanks for the assistance.

Many people think the S65 is too quiet and the S55 has a more satisfying note under full throttle. The nicest sound of the 65 engine is on start-up. The only gurgle I hear is on overrun after spirited running. It's often accompanied by little backfires -- no real bang but a little flame from the exhaust. That's a bit intimidating for the guy you just passed, but exhaust sound per se is pretty minimal.

Thanks for the reply. I see you have a S65. Would you say you like it's sound more than the S55? Nevertheless the S65 is a beast! Enjoy her.

Try these videos for comparison.

S55 W220 0-100mph Acceleration

http://youtube.com/watch?v=vABR1uQ-DVk

S65 W220 0-125mph

http://youtube.com/watch?v=mwx_AUcV3fs

S63 W221 0-100mph runs

All cars and videos belong to member 'Mmmm' or so I think.

Personally, the sound of the S63 is unbeatable but then, so is the power of the S65...

just saw new S65 this am in SF. obviously it's a nice car, esp on paper. in real life, however, the silver w/ lots of chrome and then the pano roof...i don't think it works that well together. also, too many badges on that car...between AMG, S65...and a bunch of other little things...not my taste. if you just spent $200k for car, you shouldn't have to draw attention by these stupid badges.

I think the turbos (which restrict the exhaust flow) cause the gurgling you hear at idle. This is true in the 600 as well. The 55 and 63 do not have this issue.

The S65 is much quieter under wide throttle than the S55. Doesn't bother me at all to whoosh by rather than scream by. It whooshes real fast.

Hey Whoover,

I agree, last time we talked was about the S55 2004 at Smythe European. I test drove the S55 like 3 weeks ago, great car and pretty much I almost hit 100mph on Hwy 280 from Saratoga to Wolfe Rd... lol I couldn't help myself and the sales rep was looking at me like I'm crazy. Didn't close the deal but I just wanted to share my experience, that is one monster mahcine engine there. I passed cars on the highway as if they were still parked. Amazing... but besides that after this experience I"m sure the S65's acceleration and quietness would be more preferable than S55, especially with the new technology 7 speed auto, but again the S55 is still a monster

Don't worry, all the Smythe salesmen have had worse. The guy I have bought five cars from (but not the S65) told me one prospect hit 140 on an S65 test drive (same stretch to Wolfe). And yes, the 65 kicks the 55 up several notches. It doesn't have the 7-speed though. The torque would burn it up (more gears equals smaller parts) so all the V-12s still have the 5 speed. But it will do 80 in second and has enough torque to start in second if you're not in a real hurry, so you can really manage quite well with a single gear! (I always start in first as I'm always in a real hurry.)

Good luck with your search, if you haven't found a car yet.

Yes I forgot to mention I did found my car which is posted on my Sig,
E350 2008. I had it for a week.
Its a V6 with plenty of power to move me around . No regrets after test driving from S55 to getting the E350. Im sure I will get an oppurtunity to get a V8 probably an E63 in the near future. but for now I'm happy
