V12 -- half shuts down with normal cruising?

Anyone know anything about this? Thanks.
EDIT: Not sure if this is true, but Wikipedia confirms what I said; that active cylinder control was only used on the normally aspirated V12 used in the S and CL 600s for MY 2001 and 2002.

In terms of gas mileage I can get around c. 19 mpg cruising on the freeway. This is definitely where the S600 is in its element and the range is around 300 miles on one tank according to the trip computer... (Engine speed is usually around 1750 - 2000 rpm) In the very worst stop and go traffic crawl it gets down to 9-10 mpg...
Between 11 - 15 mpg seems normal off the freeway......but gas economy is not why you buy a V12!

btw., my cousin is taking over my '04 S500 and he drives a ton and hence would put cheap gas (regular 87 octane in his Cadillac) to save 100 bucks a month. Bad idea I would think. Will he mess up the Mercedes engine by following in his cheap ***/cheap gas
ways?
