watching fuel gauge drift lower....

having had my S55 for only 3 weeks, i am still amazed at how quickly the fuel gauge drop in front of my eyes. if the car computer is accurate, i'm getting about 14mpg in mostly city driving. when i'm on hwy, it's getting 20mpg.

for me, the issue is not about the cost as much as the surprise that i'm actually watching the fuel gauge go down while driving. could it be because that since the gauge is larger, the increments seems to be more obviously? to watch the gauge drop by 1/8 or so as i take a 20-30 minute drive just seem very strange...especially if i'm not driving that far or that crazy. by way of comparion, my previous E55 seemed to sip fuel like our E320

I took a six speed c240 on a 10-15 minute test drive. I floored it a few times, and it did seem like the fuel gauge dropped during that time.

Whatever there's gas in...
Well these cars have to run on SOMETHING to get us from A-B this quickly!

Like others have said: "you gotta pay to play"

*Edit* I just noticed you have a pre-kompressor 55. Gas consuption is even worse IMO in the 55k motors.

When i had an 02 Cl55 i noticed the gas consumption was more than a "normal" car, but when i got the s55k, for the first couple of weeks i thought maybe the gas line was leaking or something cause the consumption was ridiculous.

You'll get used to it.

SL 500 (R230) & S 65 AMG (W220)
Haha, that was a good laugh, I just discussed this yesterday with a friend of mine, that the S 65 is capable of guzzling so much gas, that you actually can see the meter drop by the minute!

on hwy, i'm getting 20-21 mpg...but in the city only about 12-14.

this saturday we're heading down to LA for 400 mile trek...will be interesting to see mileage. we got 25mpg on our previous trips w/ the E320 wagon, and my guess is we could get 20-23 for this trip.

I average around 16 in the SL55, but it drops to ~14 everytime we do some new programming. I think that is more of a function of my right foot than anything else. Now, when I take the car to a road course.........it drops to 6! But man is it fun!

I switched my 2001 S-55 AMG over to AMSOIL 0-30 syn. oil. It has the lowest wear scar marks on tests and is advertised to improve gas mileage. Sure enough after switching to it my mileage increased by 1 to 2 miles to gal. It cost a little more but it has a longer drain interval so you really don't pay any more in the long run, plus if you drive a lot you are not under the car as much doing oil changes. If you don't do you own oil changes I would be careful about taking this oil to a shop to have put in my car. Most shops won't let you wait in an area where you can see what they are doing to your car and so you might be getting regular oil while your AMSOIL is getting put in the mechanics vehicle, just a thought. More information about AMSOIL products at: AMSOIL.COM.

I use a quarter tank of gas in a normal day's worth of driving with my puny V6.

i recall reading on the board that changing to new spark plugs can often improve the mileage as well. my car has 94k miles...usually i think people change close to 100k miles. what to you guys think?

I was impressed that the first month or so of ownership, my mileage was around 19.5 (S600TT). The last couple of months, it's dropped to about 18 average.

At first, I thought there was a problem - but then realized that it definitely has to do with my right foot.....
