For my S 600 I use Sunoco 94 figuring that it has to be good for the car.
But then if I run low on gas and there is only 91 octane available at other gas stations, I feel that it is a compoimise to the car.
Does anyone know the actual effects of 91 vs 93 or 94 in terms of performance or otherwise?

The engine is tuned for 91 so you won't get much benefit from 94, although the engine might "learn" about the higher octane and improve timing accordingly. I noticed a slight improvement with my S65 on 100 octane, but it really wasn't very dramatic.
The big improvement comes if you have a tuner modify the maps for a higher octane. But then you had better have access to the higher octane fuel all the time or the car will run very poorly back on 91.
