re: 2003 S5 AMG: My dealer (Chambers Somerville MA) called this AM to say that in the course of the B service (around 80K mi) they have found a problem with "the upper strut mount" on the left side. I had detected a rattle and asked them to look. It has been described as a "huge repair". They say it was "separating from rust and wear."
Rust? Wear? the car is not yet 5 years old and has been garaged and not driven especially hard. I've had the car since 4/06.
I have aftermarket extended warrant (36/100k) which should be good for another 4 moths. Of course, the dealer sold me an API package, and I gather API went bankrupt or sold.
Any advice or comments on struts and lifespan appreciated.
