Quick question...

What year did the S55 go supercharged? Was it in the 2003 model year?

If you look seriously, look for a 2004. The upgrade to MOST COMAND (DVD nav and vastly improved interface and function) is a major improvement. From 2004 to 2006 there are very few differences. Better phone integration is about it.

The old NA S55's only made 350hp!? WOW!! Are you sure about that?
The S500 was 302 hp, how did AMG only come up with 42 hp?
What was done to the engine?

S500 = 5.0L @ 302HP
S55 = 5.5L @ 350HP

Actually, it was 355 HP. That's a quite reasonable increase from 302 for mods limited to normal aspiration. Torque was 391 vs. 339 ft-lbs, and was probably more important. AMG mods have always concentrated on torque. Of course, when they started applying forced induction in 2003 things got much more interesting.

What do you folks think of this offer?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123

I asked them about swapping out the wheels and they are up for it, but I don't know what value +/- there is in ditching those 20 inchers for something a bit smaller.

Looks nice but haven't got time to look closely right now. For sure ditch the 20s, too big. Consider the 19" W220 S65 gunmetal wheels. Regular 18" S55 wheels are nice too.

If it were me, I'd start with a search (either MBUSA or Autotrader) of CPO (Starmark) cars. There seem to be a bunch with about 40-50K miles for about $40K. In this market everything's negotiable and if you can get one of those for a price you can make you are likely to be much better off.

The problem is these cars have a number of high-rate failure items. The ABC suspension often needs valve block and flush repairs, which run over $1,000. A serious failure (pump, hydraulics lines, struts, sensors, electronics) will always be a four-figure bill. Electrical modules are always $1,000 by the time you're done. Intercooler pumps are cheaper, but they are guaranteed to fail.

I personally wouldn't own one of these cars without a good (preferably Starmark) extended warranty. You may be more of a gambler, but be sure you go in with your eyes open.

I was under the impression they solved those types of gremlins in '04 and above. I guess not?

Some things are better, yes. There were some design problems with ABS high-pressure hoses, for instance, that were fixed. But at 75,000 miles you can expect expensive failures with ABC and electrical components. In 30,000 miles my 2006 S65 has had the PSE (vacuum) pump replaced, a mirror that stopped adjusting replaced and the IR sensor in the door handle for the remote window operation replaced. And an ABC valve block replaced. And I bought the car new and maintain it by the book.

The engine and powertrain are bulletproof, but ABC and electrical are beloved of gremlins.

I think if you look hard enough, you'll be able to find an '04 with > 50k miles for > $30k.
