Thinkin about changin my 01 E55 to an 05 S55? opinions wanted!!!
i will be coming across a killer deal on a 05 S55. Prolly b/w $23-25K. it has 64K miles on it. Thinkin about trading in my 01 e55 for it. I love my E55 and its absolutely a blast to drive but we often take the car on road trips and i figured something larger would be more comfy on the road trip.
I was wondering if any of you owners here can chime in on these cars and how reliable they are. As far as searching, i have and not much comes up with the 05'. I know the common issues are the IC pump & the ABC system failures, but other then this, any larger concerns???
How are the cars as far a daily driver?
Fair well in the winter with a good set of winter tires?
i know it prolly doesn't get the best mileage, but what can i expect?
Anything i need to look out for??? Any and all input you may have, i would love to read it. Thank you all!

I have had 4 55's an E, an S, a CL and an SL. All of them were fairly trouble free. The problems were--- Broken steering rack on the E when it had 500 miles on it, leaky connection on the tranny on the E and CL (half hour repair at the dealer), faulty air conditioning interior switch on the SL and the infamous gage cluster failure on the CL. One thing that was common on all of them was/is excessive rear tire wear.

All in all they were fairly dependable; none had the intercooler pump failure or ABC problems on tyhe S,CL and SL. However all but the E had the supercharger chirp.
Since I live in Kalifornia I can't comment on handling in the winter but based on driving it in the rain it probably is not going to be great. Gas mileage----don't ask.
The S can be a very comfortable car when driven normally and a beast in sheep's clothing when you drive it like you stole it.

your prices sound great - but i'd try to get extra warranty.
for me, i figured same engine and 200 extra pounds so should be similar...but not really.
1) used to get 19mpg, now getting 13-15mpg
2) it drives much larger and less quick. less nimble on curves, but more enjoyable on long drives.
3) e55 was great - no issues. s55 - had front suspension/control arms/bushings, ABC pump just went out, and rear seal just got diagnosed for leakage(still awaiting to whether extended warranty covers.
overall - still glad i have it, but i think if i bot the last year of the s55 like 05-06, it would be more reliable. good luck.

We both have had little problem on wet pavement despite having high-performance summer tires (haven't had them in snow yet). I did manage to fishtail in light rain once (in front of an on-coming semi
), but all I had to do was quickly get off the gas and apply a twitch of countersteer, and it regained traction immediately. This was with all the electronic nannies engaged. I suspect that if traction control was off I would not own an S55 any longer, and might have a face that looks like a Mack truck grille...
